Jellyfish are free-swimming members of the phylum Cnidaria. Jellyfish are found in every ocean, from the surface to the deep sea. Most jellyfish do not have a brain or central nervous system, but employ a loose network of nerves, located in the epidermis, which is called a "nerve net". Some jellyfish also have ocelli: light-sensitive organs that do not form images but which can detect light, and are used to determine up from down, responding to sunlight shining on the water's surface. These are generally pigment spot ocelli, which have some cells (not all) pigmented. Jellyfish lifespans typically range from a few hours to several months.

This lonely ape is sitting on a tropical monkey island where it enjoys crazy audio music and fresh water. This picture was created for my forgiving friend epSos.de and can be used for free, if you link epSos.de as the original author of the image.
It would like to play some monkey games, but it is not allowed to use a computer at the zoo, before the visitors go away.
It also likes to code HTML, because it has a black belt of an code ape, which by the way is some sort of a monkey business anyway.

Pet of the Week: Mimi, 11212493

Mimi is a 6-year-old female American Bulldog mix who weighs 60 pounds. This sweet girl has an adorable face…and on more than one occasion lipstick has been spotted on her head, suggesting she has collected a kiss or two from the Lollypop Farm dog walkers!
Mimi and her 3 puppies were rescued by our Law Enforcement officers because they were not being treated properly. Now that Mimi’s 3 puppies have been adopted, it’s her turn to find a loving forever home.
Mimi loves to be outside, is very good on a leash and takes treats with a very soft mouth. She has no history of living with children, so she should meet any children and dogs in your household just to be certain that everyone will get along. Mimi qualifies for our Seniors-for-Seniors Adoption Program; any qualified adopter over the age of 60 can adopt her for free! Mimi is eagerly waiting to meet you!
Pet of the Week: Cachimba, 11163418

Cachimba, a beautiful 9-year-old Golden Retriever/mix, finds herself at Lollypop Farm because her owners were moving and couldn’t bring her along. Her thick, dense coat will require some care, but the payoff will be an even more beautiful dog when you’re finished.
Our volunteer dog walkers tell us she’s very good on a leash, loves her treats, and is an all around great dog!
You can take Cachimba home for just during our Bark-to-School Adopt-a-Thon, today through Sunday, August 29th! Cachimba also qualifies for our Seniors-for-Seniors Adoption Program, so if you are 60 or older you can take her home for free. This sweet girl is eager to meet you!

Capturing a hummingbird in flight is one of those great achievements, especially if you are chasing the bird instead of attracting it using a feed.
In my case, it was even more compounded by the absence of a USM.
But to see this bird fly was just pure pleasure - zipping from one flower to another almost like an insect and so steady while stationary and in motion.
This shot is one of those "Right Time Wrong Place Shots". Had I moved a little to the right, I would have got a clearer view of the hummingbird feeding at the San Diego Wild Animal Park.
Not sure of its species, though.

June, 2008, San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park. The only thing that saved the park was the natural firebreak caused by the roads they use around the perimeter of the park. Thank goodness!

This is a big brown bat, Eptesicus fuscus. They're very similar to many Myotis species, but they're larger. They also have a keeled calcar, which the very similar Myotis lucifugus, the little brown bat, lacks.
This was shot a year ago in Maryland, actually, not at Christmas. I always have Christmas lights in my bathroom. I got a call for a bat removal from some guy's dorm room, caught the little bugger, let her loose in my bathroom for photographing, then let her go outside.
