Photo sloth
animal cruelty
You don't see it coming. A man bearing what looks like a plush toy just puts it in your arms. As if by instinct, the animal hugs you and rests there, long enough for a picture, until the man takes him away, demands some money, and move to the next tourist. It seems like animal cruelty, but the sloth doesn't seem to mind.

Portal of the day

This was once the Brooklyn headquarters of the ASPCA, which was founded in New York City in 1866. (Here's a great history of the organization.) The ASPCA owes its existence to the tireless efforts of a single man, Henry Bergh, who "alone, in the face of indifference, opposition, and ridicule," worked to bring an end to the barbaric acts of animal cruelty once seen as acceptable. That's the organization's seal, featuring an angel preventing a man from beating a horse, perched atop the doorway; this is what it looks like up close.

Behold the Galapagos Mockingbird!
animal cruelty
The Galapagos Mockingbird (Nesomimius parvulus) had been flitting around in the background on other islands, but Santa Fé Island was where we had a real opportunity to know this delightful bird. It quickly became one of my favorite avian fauna in the Galapagos archipelago.

Let's see - how many "favorites" does that make so far? Well, better to keep a list of animals you love than a tally of creatures to avoid, to wit, the horrid Banana Spider of the Ecuadorian interior. Don't (or do!) worry; one will make an appearance in this photostream eventually, though not in the paradisiacal Galapagos.

I honestly don't know how thirsty the Galapagos Mockingbird is on an average day during the dry season.. Or, more importantly, how it went about slaking that thirst.

Now, however, Mockingbirds, never slow on the uptake, have come to associate tourists with - what else - water bottles, and water bottles with a potentially refreshing drink. What Mockingbird wouldn't rather hit up a tourist charmed by its charisma than pulp a cactus paddle or whatever it was they did before Homo sapiens began arriving in large numbers. Like many other animals in the Galapagos, the Mockingbird is not shy around humans, and will walk right up to you and look you straight in the eyes,

There's one catch to this excellent hydration scheme the Mockingbirds have come up with. Remember the saying "take only memories and leave only footprints"?

In the Galapagos this means sharing one's water supply with a Galapagos Mocking Bird is verboten, interdit, prohibido, no dice. This is true regardless how cleverly the bird behaves, putting you in mind of your own pet, be it (most likely) a cat or, perhaps the odd dog.

In fact, I was beaming with pride when our group's naturalist, normally a laid-back sort of fellow, became livid on observing that the group ahead of us, mostly scruffy 20-somethings, were having a de-lightful time luring Galapagos Mockingbirds to their water bottles and then stiffing them. Hyuck, hyuck! In case my meaning isn't clear, some members of the group were presenting their water bottles to the Mockingbirds, who in chipper good faith, promptly hopped over for the promised drink. Which was withheld. This is callous animal cruelty in anyone's book.

There then ensued a lively exchange between our naturalist and our guide, on the one side, and the other group's guide, on the other. Some of the scruffy 20-somethings sent reproachful WTF glances our way, as their kind will do when one of their self-centered, antisocial and/or harebrained schemes is thwarted. Ah, the joys of never having to be young again.

Having given you a highly personal and ideosyncratic account of the Galapagos Mocking Bird's natural history, I promise to make up for it by bombarding viewers with facts and figures with the very next image of a Galapagos Mocking Bird in my photostream.

DiOGi bit the man’s leg, after which police said Cortez tried to stab the dog with the blade. The cutter broke and the Cortez then tried to choke the dog, according to police.

But DiOGi prevailed, subduing the suspect so police could take the man into custody. Cortez was arrested on charges of battery-domestic violence, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, use of a deadly weapon on a police dog and resisting an officer without violence, Barnes said.

He told arresting officers that 'everything shown in the videos was for entertainment purposes and that he did not think he did anything wrong', a police report says, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The boy was charged with six counts of cruelty to animals and three counts of animal torture.

Officers began investigating after people saw the YouTube videos and raised the alarm, police News Affairs Officer Jon Mirabelli told My Fox Chicago.

One of the two bragged that 'you couldn’t tell it was a dog' because he was moving as fast as 'a propeller', reports the Chicago Tribune.

In the background the puppies could be seen cowering while the other dogs were being abused.

The suspects are also accused of making foorage of themselves tormenting a female dog by hiding her newly born puppies from her as a form of psychological torture, Mirabelli told Fox.

They film and follow the mother as she frantically searches for them around the property.

Police claim the suspects also forced some dogs to eat their own feces in other videos, all of which were filmed in January and February.

They also allegedly poured lemon juice down a dog’s throat until it started gagging.

The pair were arrested after using their names in the videos and displaying several distinctive tattoos which helped police identify them, Mirabelli told Fox.

After searching the property in the South Austin neighborhood, five dogs and five puppies, all terriers, chihuahuas or mixes of the two, were removed and placed with the city's animal care unit, reports the Tribune.

'We’re just super relieved these dogs are safe. It was quite clear they’d be subjected to malicious torture by these people.

'They thought it was funny to torture these tiny little dogs.' said Daphna Nachminovitch, vice president of cruelty investigations at PETA.

The videos have since been taken off YouTube following complaints from PETA .

A Melbourne man was arrested early today after police say he tried to stab a police dog with a box cutter.

But police say the dog, DiOGi, wasn’t injured and left the suspect with a bite on his leg.

Police were investigating an aggravated assault involving a knife in the 1100 block of Mathers Street about 1 a.m. today. Police said the suspect, Jose Fernando Cortez, 35, was involved in a disturbance with his brother.

“Cortez armed himself with a knife and was trying to cut or harm family members,” Melbourne Police Lt. Byron Barnes said. No one was injured in that incident. When police arrived, officers saw the suspect running away.

They tried to get the man to stop, but sent in DiOGi when the man wouldn’t comply, police Lt. Dan Lynch said in a news release.

Bad News Bears

A very disturbing sight at the Nongseum Restaurant on the northern outskirts of Vientiane: two bears penned in a halfway submerged cage, apparently for the amusement of restaurant patrons. The animals have been here for approximately two months.

This restaurant is not owned by a Lao-American, unlike I previously believed. On Monday I will contact the Wildlife Conservation Society in Vientiane. I hope there is something they can do to put a stop to this kind of animal cruelty.

I will also see if I can get this publicized in the local press. I will most certainly refuse to patronize this establishment as long as it continues to engage in these kinds of despicable practices.

Horse rides no more

After years of complaints from neighbors and revelations of animal cruelty, the collection of decrepit trailers that once passed for a stable here was torn down and hauled away in 2008 after the city discovered that it was actually sitting on DOT property.

A very strange, shifty-eyed shirtless man (the former proprietor of this fine establishment?) pulled his car into the driveway while I was walking around; he told me that the place still operates as a stable. That seems quite unlikely, given the information above, but perhaps he was referring to the couple of trailers parked on a small patch of dirt on the far side of the house.

UPDATE: One horse still lives here!

This guy pulls up in his car and jumps out, his dog follows. Owner yells at dog to get back in the car and throws the dog back (animal cruelty! not the funny part). Man walks away from his car. Car starts rolling down the slight decline of a hill...I watch, mouth open, not really sure what to say. Obviously he forgot the e-brake! A nice onlooker honks his horn to alert the crazy man (yes, by this time I have dubbed him crazy) that his car is rolling down the hill. Crazy man runs back to car to pull the ebrake just as the car rests against this pole..and a lady was *trying* to stop it by pushing on it, good-luck. Crazy man yells at the dog that he is ugly and stupid. Dude, why do you even own a dog??
