Translations is a collaborative work by Tom Burtonwood and Jacob C. Hammes. It has been selected for the inaugural Art Loop Open an art competition in Chicago. Translations is exhibited in the lobby of the Hard Rock Hotel located at 230 N. Michigan. Members of the public are invited to view the piece from October 15th – 29th and vote on it. Translations was first presented at Three Walls as part of their “Chasing Two Rabbits” program in Winter 2010.

Art Loop Open: www.artloopopen.com/artists/tom-burtonwood-jacob-c-hammes
Translations on Vimeo: vimeo.com/10750465

About the video:

Contained within our unique animal identity is a strong desire to witness and experience symmetry, a desire informed by an overwhelming lack of its immediate presence in our waking lives. Symmetry and uniformity are present in the video collaboration between Burtonwood and Hammes, abstracted in terms of geometry and pure tones. Folding cubes and squares are accompanied by modulated, warbling sine waves and occasional bursts of distorted guttural voices, suggesting a human presence in a world of pure geometric and sonic abstraction.

Tom Burtonwood is an artist originally from the UK living and working in Oak Park, IL. He is interested in an array of subjects and issues relating to image making, ubiquitous technology and interactive objects. Currently he is working on a series of modular color studies relating to the video game Tetris. Recent exhibitions include The Center for Book and Paper Arts, Columbia College, Chicago; Three Walls, Chicago; Fountain, Brooklyn; Apex Art, New York. Burtonwood teaches at Columbia College and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Jacob C Hammes is a Chicago based interdisciplinary artist whose range of projects investigate the strained relationships and sites of interaction between humans and the natural world. Hammes is primarily interested in emphasizing the disconnection between the desire to emulate nature and our ability to understand it. Primarily using sculpture, digital media, and hypnosis, Hammes attempts to reveal the struggle to connect with our own animal identity.
Hammes has exhibited and performed extensively throughout the midwest and internationally. Hammes' work and various projects have been reviewed in publications such as Art Papers, Proximity Magazine, and the Leonardo Music journal.

Giant anteater born at National Zoo: Interview with biologist Marie Magnuson

On March 12, a giant anteater was born at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. This is only the second giant anteater to be born in the history of the Zoo. National Zoo animal care staff and veterinarians had been closely monitoring mother Maripi (ma-RIP-ee) for the past six months, performing weekly ultrasounds and other diagnostics. The National Zoo staff has yet to determine the baby’s gender or weight—and may not for some time, allowing time for mother and baby to bond.

Oranjello likes to go into the bathtub. See that metal drain hair-stopper? Gone. He played with it, grabbed it, and moved it somewhere else. We have no idea where his stash is!

And yes: Our bathmats are really gross. But since you WASH in the shower, we fail to see the issue in this, other than aesthetic. Just wash your foot when you get out if you're paranoid. It beats slipping.

Nice Video Of Animals photos

A few nice video of animals images I found:

20071010 - Beavis - 139-3966 - inside the LCD TV box

Image by Rev. Xanatos Satanicos Bombasticos (ClintJCL)
Beavis loved playing in the box, so finally we set it upright and let him learn to jump out of it. He learned pretty fast! After a few tries, he could get out of it in 1 jump!

Image by Rev. Xanatos Satanicos Bombasticos (ClintJCL)
We tried to add some excitement to the toys by tying them to the light fixture. Beavis would play with those toys for hours.

2nd World Day for the Abolition of Meat - a Report from Italy

22 towns answered the call for the Abolition of Meat, planning events on January 30-31.
An extraordinarily large number of veg*ans participated by demonstrating against farming, hunting and fishing: 100 persons in Milan, 50 in Turin, 35 in Pordenone, 30 in Rome...
The activists created effective happenings, with masks and chains, forming lively representations of the objectification of animals and of mourning for their butchery, showing videos of animal exploitation and
filling the air with the victims' cries. We displayed the significance of this tragedy and brought it to public attention, in order to voice what we ourselves seldom dare to say: end the ongoing slaughter!

We handed out thousands of flyers and quizzes on the life of farmed
animals (available here: aboliamolacarne.blogspot.com/2010/01/materiali-per-la-sec... ).

The happenings were well covered by the medias: many newspapers and radios talked about the abolition of meat , reporting local demos, and the national TV followed the demos in Milan and Pordenone.

Complete reports with photos and videos from each town will be available on aboliamolacarne.blogspot.com. Photo gallery here: picasaweb.google.it/abolizionecarne

We are happy to inform that Italy is planning another Day for the
Abolition of Meat on April 17-18!

20080515 - mothra - 156-5673 - Oranjello and the moth

Some cool video of animals images:

20080515 - mothra - 156-5673 - Oranjello and the moth

Image by Rev. Xanatos Satanicos Bombasticos (ClintJCL)
Oranjello likes to play with his food. Here he is seeming a little apprehensive about taking another swat at it.

BACKSTORY: This HUUUGE moth fell into our house from the back kitchen door. We called it "Mothra"; a common christening for house moths of this size. This was to be a good opportunity for Oranjello to satisfy his hunting urges, as well as to train him to hunt pests -- since we have the occasional mice and snakes (and raccoons!). It also proved to be an excellent photo-op.

Is he throwin' down a gang sign?? Or is he just in the hizouse??? ..... And look how spiky his hair is! We didn't realize he was a longhair! Though as he has grown older, the hair has stayed the same length, so he no longer looks as longhair as he originally did.

The museum's nature trail was open for a brief period after the wedding ceremony / before the wedding reception.

These foxes seemed sooo bored in their tiny cage. All they did is run around for the most part.

Of course, I've seen real foxes in my back yard, and they are quite skittish.

20070325-26 - Catcha the raccoon - 116-1682 - raccoon grabs stick

Prior to driving him to the park, we wanted to clear some of the dirt out so the car wouldn't get so dirty. Not wanting to get scratched (or rabies), we used a stick to clear out the dirt. The raccoon woke up and started grabbing the sticks that we were using. Cute. This fatty was playful, much like a cat.

20060914 - Misfit & another snake - 106-0688 - swipe

Image by Rev. Xanatos Satanicos Bombasticos (ClintJCL)
This is just a funny position to catch in a photo. Is he playing golf? Bowling? It looks like one arm is attacking, and the rest of him decided to not join in.

For video of Misfit playing with the snake: www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqwQUGvDiQU

Back-story: We noticed Misfit had something, and it was a snake! He dropped it into his water fountain, and we had to take it apart. We let him play with it for awhile, then put it in a bottle. The bottle drove him crazy -- he attacked the movement within every 5 minutes for days. It was his new favorite toy -- the pet of our pet. So we kept the snake in captivity for a week or so. He was not interested in our house crickets, which we joked that Misfit caught for him. After a week, it not only needed probably needed food, but also stank, so we released it. It did need to be "watered" a few times during the week, too, which no doubt increased the stink-power.

Misfit, snake.
