Woodcut diagram of a visual alphabet and its application from Johann Horst von Romberch's work on memory, Congestorium artificiose memorie (Venice: Melchiorre Sessa, 1533). "Visual alphabets are ways of representing letters of the alphabet by images. These are formed in various ways; for example with pictures of objects whose shape resemble [sic] letters of the alphabet, as compasses or a ladder for A; or a hoe for N. Another way is through pictures of animals or birds arranged in the order of the first letter of their names, as A for Anser, goose, B for Bubo, owl."--F.A. Yates, The Art of Memory (London: Pimlico, 1992), p. 124-125.

I don't know if they have anything like 4-H in other countries. My mother is an avowed liar and told me as a girl that I couldn't join because I didn't have any siblings. This is, of couse, not true.
There is very little point being upset about the practical experience I missed out on, not to mention the valuable contacts that would be serving me now. The past is old and having no children of my own, I don't get an opinion on the matter.
Still, being an outsider of sorts in my second chosen profession, I can see now that 4-H fosters a sort of gang mentality among those who farm later in life. It's a hard crust to break through.
However, those farmers are getting old. Like the past, when they're gone, it'll be my turn.

Ready to Strike
Thanks all! For you, here are the most Popular Pictures you dig from my stream. Thanks again!
I found this guy in some caves just outside of Kuala Lumpur. I've always wanted one for a pet because it is both eccentric and people might mistake me for a bond villain. I understand these can be house-trained even. Well, one of these can be house-trained and the other kind, that looks similar, is quite dangerous and the bacteria in his saliva can kill you. So, since I always get Gila Monsters and Iguanas confused, I never ended up getting one because I would hate to bring home the wrong thing.
This was a single-shot HDR. It really helped to bring out all the texture and color in the scales. It was shot at a low f-stop to keep the focus on the creature, rather than its surroundings.

Mimikry?
This animal looks in so many details exactly like a wasp and still it's not. It even has the three dark flecks on the head, the german wasp has. It is shorter however and doesn't have the waist of a Yellow Jacket. I thought it must be a fly, but the eyes don't look like those of a fly and even less do the antennae. It is the size of a bee and it is all the time around in our garden which is in Eastern Austria, Central Europe - south of Vienna. Sometimes even attacking bumblebees who clear the field immediately (I've seen this twice).

Split-Twig Figurine GRCA_30082f
Some of the most facinating artifacts found here in the Grand Canyon are split-twig figurines..
.
Each one is made from a single twig, often willow, split down the middle, and then carefully folded into animal shapes..
.
These figurines date from 2,000 to 4,000 years ago and were found in remote caves. .
.
Often they are in the shape of deer or bighorn sheep, sometimes with horns or antlers. Occasionally, they are pierced with another stick, resembling a spear, or are stuffed with artiodactyl dung. Split-twig figurines have been found in dry caves in the Great Basin and on the Colorado Plateau, and were first recognized in the Grand Canyon in 1933. .
.
--While their exact function remains a mystery, recent research suggests that split-twig ----figurines were totems associated with the Late Archaic hunting and gathering culture. Their occurrence in remote, relatively inaccessible uninhabited caves indicates that these figurines were not toys. They are usually found under rock cairns, indicating careful placement..

Oriental garden lizard!!!
The Oriental Garden Lizard, Eastern Garden Lizard or Changeable Lizard (Calotes versicolor) is an agamid lizard found widely distributed in Asia. It has also been introduced in many other parts of the world. It is an insectivore and the male gets a bright red throat in the breeding season leading to a common incorrect name of "Bloodsucker".
