Here he is attempting to hide, while ignoring his cat food.

BACKSTORY: Dave & Lacey brought over a kitten for Clint & Carolyn to try out. This poor kitten did not fit into our family. He was terrified of Clint, somewhat scared of Carolyn, and basically was ONLY interested in hiding behind piles of clutter large enough that human beings can't get to him. Completely anti-social and a nervous wreck. So 2 days later, we gave the kitten back to Dave & Lacey, as Lacey had stated we could if we didn't like it. He ultimately found a new home with other animals and kids and we hear the kitten was much happier and doing well. And he's probably still alive, too, which is more than we can say for poor little Beavis. Dave & Lacey's kid nicknamed the kitten Runny, because he kept running away, but he did eventually get a real name. We never found out what it was, and it doesn't really matter. Look at his feet shaking! This guy was an intellectual wimp. He had no place in our household. We require strong cats.

cowering.

Aimee and Vodka

Aimee and Vodka
names for animals
We’d seen a poster outside the butchers in Castle Douglas (which, incidentally has the nicest sausages this side of the border so if you’re ever in the area, pay it a visit :D) for an ‘open day’ to raise money for a local donkey sanctuary and it had a photograph of a lovely fuzzy donkey who went by the name of Vodka on it.

It transpired that all three were rescues. Vodka, who had been imported to France from somewhere else, had been rescued from the meat trade, scared and unconfident, with her long shaggy coat all matted and muddy. A bar in Glasgow has sponsored her, I can’t remember the name of it right now, only that it had ‘Vodka’ in the title but I’m sure I’d seen her in an ad campaign once before, so it was extra nice to meet her. She was by far one of the friendliest donkeys I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and was VERY interested in Nigel. Her flag like ears pricked as she sniffed him and she was utterly transfixed.

Then there was Fergus, a tiny little jack who got very jealous when he was ignored for more than a minute. (remind you of anyone?) I can’t remember his history but regardless of what it was, he was adorable, if a little grumpy.

Aimee, I think was the name of the other jenny, a gorgeous little pinto who I only really saw the head and legs of as the rest of her was covered in a rug to help ease her sweet itch. She had been a racing donkey and had competed in several ‘Donkey Derbys’ before coming here. The cobs, who I never ‘met’ were grazing the muddy paddock in the background, blatantly ignoring everyone else

I picked up a leaflet with pictures of all the donkeys at this other sanctuary and their stories. There was also a section with some of the horses that would be going to the slaughterhouse in France shortly with prices and details about them. It was heartbreaking, seeing all these animals with such potential looking at their own demise. There were even two mares and foals, one was in foal at the same time as well. It said that they’d be going to Italy where it is legal to kill pregnant mares for meat.

I can’t even begin to put into words how wrong that is, I just can’t.

If I had the money, god, if only I had money.

Nasty Spider

Her full name is Hellspawn the Demon Spider from the Bowels of the Underworld where Satan will Keep Your Soul for all Eternity. She's a red trapdoor spider and she's very defensive. She is from the Idiopidae family, most likely. Possibly from the Gorgyrella genus. Can anyone confirm? Whatever she is, it is a commonly available trapdoor species in the hobby, as far as trapdoor spiders go, anyway.

She is also seen here:

Soweto visit in Johannesburg
names for animals
Some pictures of a trip to South Africa in Oktober 2011.

Taken with an Canon Eos 60D post processed with Adobe Lightroom 3.

Soweto is a lower-class-populated urban area of the city of Johannesburg in Gauteng, South Africa, bordering the city's mining belt in the south. Its name is an English syllabic abbreviation for South Western Townships. Formerly a separate municipality, it is now incorporated in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, Suburbs of Johannesburg.
The history of African townships south west of Johannesburg that would later form Soweto was propelled by the increasing eviction of Africans by city and state authorities. Africans had been drawn to work on the gold mines that were established after 1886. From the start they were accommodated in separate areas on the outskirts of Johannesburg, such as Brickfields (Newtown). In 1904 British-controlled city authorities removed African and Indian residents of Brickfields to an "evacuation camp" at Klipspruit municipal sewage farm (not Kliptown, a separate township) outside the Johannesburg municipal boundary, following a reported outbreak of plague. Two further townships were laid out to the east and the west of Johannesburg in 1918. Townships to the south west of Johannesburg followed, starting with Pimville in 1934 (a renamed part of Klipspruit) and Orlando in 1935.

Iguana
names for animals
Iguana is a herbivorous genus of lizard native to tropical areas of Central America and the Caribbean. The genus was first described in 1768 by Austrian naturalist Josephus Nicolaus Laurenti in his book Specimen Medicum, Exhibens Synopsin Reptilium Emendatam cum Experimentis circa Venena. Two species are included in the genus Iguana: the Green Iguana, which is widespread throughout its range and a popular pet, and the Lesser Antillean Iguana, which is endemic to the Lesser Antilles and endangered due to habitat destruction.

The word "iguana" is derived from a Spanish form of the original Taino name for the species "Iwana".

A stunned Western Screech Owl someone brought into the Aviary(flew into a window). I named him(her?) Yoda, for obvious reasons, but I think he is a master of the dark side of the force based on the dirty look he gave me.

RED CROSSBILL

This photo shows the unique bill for which they are named. It is specially designed for extracting seeds from conifer cones. This winter has been an invasion of these birds, along with the much rarer White-Winged Crossbill, and they have continued to hang around this spring.

This is one image of six from a series about identities online and in real life, exhibited in 2003 under the name Personatus together with Minna Grönstrand at two locations in Helsinki companied by a website (not available anymore).

The animal figures used in this series are something I originally designed when I was a children's camp counsellor, in the mid 1990's, for the kids to print on t-shirts. The figures became popular also among grown-ups and I just republished them on Redbubble: ANIMAL t-shirts.

Turtles are not the most exciting animal to capture on video (unless they're having sex). However, Oranjello may beg to differ.

BACKSTORY: Carolyn found a turtle -- right where we turn around in the chute to get out of our driveway. He surely would have been crushed had she not noticed, as he was not walking. He had dug a little hole and was kind of hanging out in it. So we took him inside for a photo shoot with the cat, named him Timmy The Turtle (after a NoFX song), and kept him in our bathtub for 3 days. Why? I don't know. Just for the novelty of it. Later, we released him by the creek in our back yard.

Another interesting thing about this turtle is that he barely fit in his shell. When his head went in, his tail would stick out; and vice-versa.

lunging, walking, watching.

National Zoo Andean Bear Cubs Receive Names!
names for animals
Photos courtesy of Karen Abbott, Smithsonian's National Zoo.

April 25, 2013

Big news: our Andean bear cubs officially have names! Keepers chose the name Nicole for the female cub. They wanted to honor the memory of her father, Nikki, who passed away last August after a year-long battle with cancer. The male cub, Curt, is named in honor of late Zoo Advisory Board Member Curt Winsor.

Over the next few weeks, keepers will be baby-proofing the yards by adding hay bedding and other elements to make the yard as safe as possible for adventurous baby bears who like to climb. Once animal care staff determine that the family has acclimated to the yard, they’ll make their public debut!

Unfortunately, the bears’ outdoor enclosure is not equipped with a cam. We hope that you’ll be able to come to the Zoo and see them in person.

Penguin Beach

There are p-p-plenty of penguins at ZSL London Zoo in our stunning new Penguin Beach exhibit - England’s biggest penguin pool.

Penguin Beach opened in 2011 and houses around sixty penguins of three different species: African penguins, Humboldt penguins and a single, male rockhopper penguin named Ricky.

London Zoo is the world's oldest scientific zoo. It was opened in London on 27 April 1828 and was originally intended to be used as a collection for scientific study. It was eventually opened to the public in 1847. Today it houses a collection of 755 species of animals, with 16,802 individuals, making it one of the largest collections in the United Kingdom. The zoo is sometimes called Regent's Zoo.

It is managed under the aegis of the Zoological Society of London (established in 1826) and is situated at the northern edge of Regent's Park, on the boundary line between City of Westminster and Camden (the Regent's Canal runs through it). The Society also has a more spacious site at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire to which the larger animals such as elephants and rhinos have been moved. As well as being the first scientific zoo, ZSL London Zoo also opened the first Reptile house (1849), first public Aquarium (1853), first insect house (1881) and the first children's zoo (1938).

ZSL receives no state funding and relies on 'Fellows', 'Friends', 'Members', entrance fees and sponsorship to generate income.

Guru Maitriyogin and the dog's pain
names for animals
There is a story that one day, when Maitriyogin was teaching, a dog barked at someone, who, losing his temper, threw a stone at it. The dog was hit in the ribs and yelped. Feeling great sorrow for the animal, the teacher cried out and fell down from the throne. ‘This is taking things a bit too far,’ thought his disciples. Knowing what was in their minds, Maitriyogin said, look here, at my ribs.’ And on his body, exactly where the stone had hit the dog, he had a bruise. He had taken the suffering of the animal upon himself.

what a day!

magic in the sky.

I woke up. my left side of my neck and shoulder didn't want to move. painful! Got to work and Ruth gave me a wonderful massage (I forgot, in one of her previous lives she was a physio..). It helped a bit.
Getting quotes from printers to have 12 A1 color laminated prints (expensive!!!) Ruth opens the yellow page, sees a number, says, let's just give it a try....Ruth managed to get all 12 A1's for free! magic

Frerieke.nl down. email from mum....she is missing her daily drug (reading my photo of the day). I said: the good news is you can still find it on flickr, but no, that's not the same...Thanks mum for being an addict to the drugs I create...so much that you take on paying to enable that crazy stuff of mine to be online. Very much appreciated!

Met up with Tina this evening, who I hadn't seen for a long time! I decided it is time to reconnect with friends, I say it...put it out there in the universe.

get home...mail from Hes, who I haven't been in contact with for a LONG time (the universe comes back at me!) Surfchicas.nl down (aai yeah...i have no money for my own site, nor for all the other sites registered on my name). Am just writing Hes an email back...how we need a 'breakdown' (no money to have sites online) to experience the 'breakthrough' (yiehaa...connecting with friends)

Spoke with Tina (who is 39 and single and running her own architectural firm ) about the lives we are living that are so different from the lives of most of our friends. Jep, mine are also getting babies now after having bought houses ....which I think is great! and sometimes I think...why not me? and then there is this big smile on my face with the thought of how much I love what I am doing

ps. the earrings, glasses and deer are borrowed from Tina. you think they fit me?

Two-Toed Sloth

Leander the two-toed sloth enjoys a tasty platter of his favourite foods at ZSL London Zoo.
Joining the Zoo's Rainforest Life exhibit, which is already home to a female sloth, Marilyn, Leander moved to ZSL London Zoo from Germany as part of a conservation breeding programme.

Leander’s name originates from the Greek word for ‘lion’, but keepers have noticed he’s a little shyer than his moniker would suggest.

Welcoming the new addition with a tasty dish, keeper Tegan McPhail has high hopes for his future at the Zoo: “We’re really hoping that Leander will hit it off with our female sloth Marilyn.

“Although he’s a bit shy at the moment, he’s a young and handsome chap, so we’re hoping she’ll fall for his charms and we’ll be celebrating some more new arrivals in the future.”

Mountain Goat (Oreamnos americanus)

It is a large-hoofed mammal found only in North America. Despite its vernacular name, it is not a member of Capra, the genus of true goats. It stays at high elevations and is a sure-footed climber, often resting on rocky cliffs that predators cannot reach. The mountain goat's feet are well-suited for climbing steep, rocky slopes, sometimes with pitches of 60 degrees or more, with inner pads that provide traction and cloven hooves that can be spread apart as needed. Also, the tips of their feet have dewclaws that are sharp to keep them from slipping. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountain_goat

Went to the Buttonwood Park Zoo in New Bedford, Massachusetts today with the kids for their "ZOObilee", a change-up from what they've been doing the past few years for the holiday season (previously, they did "Cookies with Santa"–I liked this program better, since it actually gets you out into the zoo and not just hanging around the visitor center.)

This is the oldest of the zoo's harbor seals (he's 31, although I don't think the zookeeper mentioned his name.) The eye looks cloudy because, well, it is–the seal has a cataract in his right eye. Apparently eye problems are a common malady in aging seals, just like they are in people.

The pattern on the seal is making it hard for me to tell if it just looks that way or if I should have bumped the ISO up another stop.

Here's an interesting cat eye color: BLUE!

We require strong cats.

laying.
Runny the cat, blue eye, eye, scratching post.

Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina) - Rollins Savanna, Lake County Forest Preserve District, near Grayslake, IL - 5 June 2011

My memory says that this turtle measured ~18" long head-to-tail. I sent the images to a naturalist at LCFPD for identification. In addition to the name, she added that these turtles spend most of their lives sitting on the bottom of rivers and ponds. This out-of-water wandering is likely to find a place to build a nest and lay eggs. This turtle is probably a female looking for such a place.

National Zoo Andean Bear Cubs Receive Names!
