Never-ending Marine Specimens
The Vanderbilt Museum on Long Island, New York is housed in the mansion once owned by William K. Venderbilt ll (the great-grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, founder of the New York Central Railroad and the Staten Island Ferry). "Willie K." was an avid sailor and collector. He travelled around the globe, collecting artifacts and natural history specimens, some from the ocean floor by Willie K. himself, as he loved to dive. The mansion is known as the Eagle's Nest, which was opened to the public as a museum at Willie K.'s bequest in 1922.

For highly social animals like dolphins, life's just more fun in crowd.

Spearer mantis shrimp (Harpiosquilla sp.)
These animals are often mistaken for shrimps but mantis shrimps belong to a different Order. They have toothed claws that snap shut like those of their land-based name-sake the praying mantids.
More about this animal on the wildfacts sheets on wildsingapore.

Katlin & Alyssa - Goniolithon study
This image depicts students of my Marine Biology course aboard the sailing vessel Sirena.
Students and I brought back a bucketful ofGoniolithon chunks after a snorkel nearby. Goniolithon is a coralline red algae that provides protection for a multitude of marine animals.
After dinner, we set up a makeshift lab in the cockpit of the boat and went about a macrooexploration of the life of the area. These are always good for several hours of focused exploratory learning.

Sponges are animals!
Sponges look like some sort of weird lifeform from another planet. Often mistaken for plants, they are actually animals. They don't move around and usually grow on hard surfaces like coral rubble and rocks. They feed by sucking in water and filtering out the edible bits.
Many sponges are colourful and they often come in bizarre shapes.
