Little Brown Jugs

Hexastylis arifolia flowering at the Daniel Boone Native Gardens. You have to look really closely to see the flowers. They are said to attract fungus gnats for pollination through their odor, so they don't need to be pretty. The seeds of these plants are spread by ants, which they attract with a sticky coating that the ants like to eat. The ants will carry the seeds into their burrows and protect them from other animals that might eat them, thus safely planting them away from the mother plant.

Dear Louis,

I am still looking for that letter. Why don't you write to me? Have you forgot your W. Va bonnie? I am sending you the picture of Maude Adams in Chantecler. My friend and I are going to see her to night Feb 12. Louis all the seats were sold in 72 minutes. They could get any price they wish. Fairmont is crazy about it. I think it will be some thing swell to see. Please write.

Amakiki, Hemignathus virens, is referred to as "the characteristic bird of the wet ohia forests of all the Hawaiian islands." It can be seen among the bright red flowers of the ohia trees in these areas. This bird is endemic to Hawaii, that is, it is of a type unlike any other that exists elsewhere in the world. It has (at least) one song that it dispenses from a perch and, also, a different song when in flight.

This is Lady Susan Beresford and her horse (with no name). Susan was a daughter of Lady Blanche Somerset (daughter of the 8th Duke of Beaufort) and John Henry de la Poer Beresford (fifth Marquis of Waterford, Lord Lieutenant of Waterford and Honorary Colonel of the Royal Artillery, South Irish Division).

At this time the Beresfords lived at Mayfield House, Portlaw, Co. Waterford. Here's some information on Mayfield House, unfortunately now in ruins...
