That's the Belgian Ardennes: a lot of water, lots of rain. Beautiful green hilled landscape. And hiking paths that end in a river. So I had to find another route.

Have a look at the blog post at Youssouf's Sheeplog with this photo.

The last day in the Ardennes. A lovely sunny morning, only spoiled by a little raindrop in the afternoon. Relaxing in the garden.
And oooh, I love being carressed and tickeled!

On 20 Jan, near the Oso Bay Turnaround in Flour Bluff, I came across a few Turkey Vultures eating something, which turned out to be a sea turtle of some type. I'm uploading these for the Turtle Lab at Padre Island National Seashore. -- Many of these were taken with a spotting scope that I had just obtained and was still learning how to use, so they've been sharpened significantly in post-processing.

Suspended Animation Classic #1,050
First published January 25, 2009 (#4) (Dates are approximate)

Who’s Who of American Comic Books: 1928-1999/free on your computer/created by Jerry Bails and lots of associate fans.
Type the above title into your browser and here is what you will find on the home page:
“On November 23, 2006, the "Father Of Comic Book Fandom" and creator of this database, Jerry Bails, passed away in his sleep. This website remains a continued tribute to his efforts at making sure that those who helped create our favorite four-color medium are given the credit that they richly deserve.”
In addition to this introduction, you’ll find the most comprehensive listing of American cartoonists and their work ever compiled.
It wasn’t always so.
The Who’s Who of American Comic Books was originally published as a series of magazines. If you can find a set today, buy them. They are rare indeed. I am blessed to own a set, and have used it as a source of information when writing Suspended Animation for almost twenty years.
That list of cartoonists and their work includes an artist’s or writer’s birthday and deathday, his education, the comics titles he worked on and the dates they appeared, and comics related work like comic strips, advertising, prose books, movie posters, and much more.
This list is so comprehensive that I’d guess one could spend years reading without finishing it. It is unparalleled and unsurpassed in the world of comics.
It is difficult to imagine a serious fan of comics who would not find hours of enjoyment here. In fact, no matter how great a comics scholar, there is something surprising and new on almost every page.
That aforementioned home page finishes with: “Thank you Jerry Bails; may the rest of us in comic fandom continue to do your example proud.”
Amen.
This wonderful recourse receives the highest recommendation.

Usually, a designer looks for a suitable typeface for a given text. The students of the third semester in communication design at the HTW changed this approach for their semester project with Prof. Jürgen Huber so that the question now was: which text fits to my typeface?

Different texts for the FontFonts thus making very different books: from manually sewed book about fashion design to the leaded short story collection by Edgar Allan Poe. From oversized book of folded paper planes to the classic “Animal farm” bound in cloth and in a suitable slipcase. Here FF Tartine Script by Xavier Dupré has been chosen.

They are less closely related to African Buffalo(Syncerus caffer), and so they are NOT a buffalo. Geek rant over.

Caroline had not noticed how many bears there were until I made mention of them -- sort of like how I never noticed I lived by a square dancing centre for nearly two years 'til someone pointed it out.

They're everywhere. Her dauther calls the smaller ones "starter-bears" as they are usually right by the door and perhaps about 8 inches (20cm) tall. This is a mid-sized bear. These are often found either by the door or in an outer corner of the lawn. The far more elusive Big Bear is always found as a sculpture arrangement in a lawn-pedistal setup or as the focal point of a garden.

As a geek of sorts, I did a rough tally of the occurances of "bearness" and "bear-osity." On side streets I found an average of 45% bearitude (all bear types included, double bears counting twice). An extreme of 70% bear infiltration was found on Floral Dr. between McKnight Ave. and Myrle St. Busier roads tended to have slightly fewer bears, with an average of 40% bearness.

It remains unknown how many of those bears were errected in earnest, how many were gifts from relatives with poor taste, or even how many of them were meant in the spirit of absurd humour. I saw none of the home bears decorated (as I would immediately do upon receipt of such "art") in any way.

The exception being the giant midwestern-sized (35ft/10m tall) one sitting atop Polar Chevrolet (Co. Rd. F & Hwy 61). He normally has polka-dotted shorts painted on him in the summer or a scarf in a cold winter, but is now painted with a very disturbing and potentially all-seing eye.

While I suggested they might be lodge sign or something (norwegian free-masons?), Matt noticed they were not polar bears at all, but black and grizzly bears painted white.

Marmota / Marmot
types of animals
Image by Marcio Cabral de Moura

At Saint Helen's Island, Montreal.
The marmots are a genus, Marmota, of squirrels. There are 14 species in this genus.

Marmots are generally large ground squirrels. Those most often referred to as marmots tend to live in mountainous areas such as the Alps, northern Appenines, Eurasian steppes, Carpathians, Tatras, and Pyrenees in Europe and northwestern Asia; the Rocky Mountains, Black Hills, the Cascades, and Sierra Nevada in North America; and the Deosai Plateau in Pakistan and Ladakh in India. The groundhog, however, is also properly called a marmot, while the similarly-sized but more social prairie dog is not classified in the genus Marmota but in the related genus Cynomys.

Marmots typically live in burrows (often within rockpiles, particularly in the case of the Yellow-bellied Marmot), and hibernate there through the winter. Most marmots are highly social, and use loud whistles to communicate with one another, especially when alarmed.

Marmots mainly eat greens and many types of grasses, berries, lichens, mosses, roots and flowers.

I know I wouldn't want to get my fingers caught in that jaw. I believe this is a type of snapping turtle.

Today, I was lucky enough to observe a pair of these large, interesting birds at a nearby lake. I hadn't seen these types of birds in my many previous trips to this particular lake, so I did an internet and Wikipedia search upon my return home. They appear to be American White Pelicans and can have wingspans of 8-10 feet (2.4-3.0 meters). The "horn" on the bill develops during breeding season. That would explain their territorial behavior, as they were chasing away ducks and birds in a very aggressive manner. According to Wikipedia, they breed in large colonies, so perhaps they dropped in for a visit before heading off to breeding grounds.
