Amakiki, Hemignathus virens, is referred to as "the characteristic bird of the wet ohia forests of all the Hawaiian islands." It can be seen among the bright red flowers of the ohia trees in these areas. This bird is endemic to Hawaii, that is, it is of a type unlike any other that exists elsewhere in the world. It has (at least) one song that it dispenses from a perch and, also, a different song when in flight.

This is Lady Susan Beresford and her horse (with no name). Susan was a daughter of Lady Blanche Somerset (daughter of the 8th Duke of Beaufort) and John Henry de la Poer Beresford (fifth Marquis of Waterford, Lord Lieutenant of Waterford and Honorary Colonel of the Royal Artillery, South Irish Division).

At this time the Beresfords lived at Mayfield House, Portlaw, Co. Waterford. Here's some information on Mayfield House, unfortunately now in ruins...
