Okay, the lack of animals disappointed me, but the fact that they had an Okapi made my day. Until very recently (2006), they were believed extinct so YES!

if you can help me destroy craigslist, i will pay you. the reason: the site is doing nothing to remove bestiality ads. the police do nothing when complaints are made, and the media has yet to respond when i try and involve them. the site is garbage across the board, but the fact that it openly tolerates the sexual abuse and torture of animals makes it deserve to be killed.

PRESS RELEASE from The Donkey Sanctuary
17 April 2012

International animal welfare charity The Donkey Sanctuary has branched out into wildlife and conservation events, hosting its first ever wildlife ramble this month.

The charity’s headquarters near Sidmouth in Devon are open to the public with free admission and parking 365 days a year, but whilst donkeys remain the star attraction, many visitors are unaware of the wealth of flora and fauna also on offer. Earlier this month, the charity held its first ever wildlife ramble to show visitors what to look out for.

James Chubb, Events and Activities Manager, explains:

“The Donkey Sanctuary is very fortunate to occupy around 400 acres of rolling East Devon hills in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Whilst this provides rich pasture for our resident donkeys, it is also a haven for all kinds of wildlife, and we are looking at ways that one can enrich the other.

“Our first wildlife ramble provided an ideal opportunity for visitors to discover the incredible variety of plant and animal life here at The Donkey Sanctuary. Key spots of the day included woodpeckers, buzzards and some tell-tale signs of a colony of scarce lesser horseshoe bats, not to mention an impressive selection of edible and not so edible vegetation! For me, the star discovery was a glow-worm larvae, very exciting as the species is very sensitive to change, so if we look after their habitat they should be here to stay.

“Over the coming years we are going to explore ways in which we can combine donkey welfare with improving and protecting habitats for wildlife. As a charity we are proud of the fact that our Devon and Dorset farms have been home to the likes of barn owls, otters and water voles, but this marks a new stage in our understanding and appreciation of the wildlife in our care.”

NYC - Bronx - Bronx Zoo - Bison Range
animal pound
William T. Hornaday, the first director of the Bronx Zoo, had a deep interest in the American bison and chose to make them the first conservation success story in the zoological society's history. Once numbering 50 million in North America, bison had been decimated by hunting and westward expansion. In October 1899, Hornaday acquired bison Bronx Zoo and began to build the zoo herd. In 1905, with fewer than 1,000 American bison left in the wild, NYZS sponsored the founding of the American Bison Society at the Bronx Zoos Lion House. With Hornaday as the bison groups president, the organization was instrumental in securing national protection for the bison and rangeland for the establishment of new herds. In 1907, 15 of the Bronx Zoo bison were shipped to Oklahomas Wichita Mountain Preserve. Subsequently, bison were provided for other refuges in Montana, South Dakota, and Nebraska. Gradually, the western herds grew and the bison population rebounded. Many of todays bison in the western U.S. are descendents of those Bronx Zoo animals shipped at the turn of the 20th century.

In Western culture, the bison is commonly referred to as buffalo, but this is a misnomer. Although belonging to the same family, Bovidae, true buffalo are native only to Africa and Asia. Only two species of the genus bison still exist: the American Bison and the European Bison. They are the largest terrestrial mammals in North America and Europe.

American bison's two subspecies are the Plains Bison (Bison bison bison), distinguished by its smaller size and more rounded hump, and the Wood Bison (Bison bison athabascae), distinguished by its larger size and taller square hump. Bison inhabited the Great Plains of the United States and Canada in massive herds, ranging from the Great Slave Lake in Canada's far north to Mexico in the south, and from eastern Oregon almost to the Atlantic Ocean. Like their cattle relatives, bison are nomadic grazers and travel in herds,

Bison have a shaggy, dark brown winter coat, and a lighter weight, lighter brown summer coat. They can reach up to 2 6½ ft tall, 10 ft long and weigh 900 to 2,000 pounds. Biosn live to be about 20 years old and are born without their trademark "hump" or horns, which develop at maturity at around two to three years of age.

**
The Bronx Zoo, located within the Bronx Park, is the largest metropolitan zoo in the United States, comprising 265 acres of parklands and naturalistic habitats and home to over 4,000 animals. Focused on conservation, it opened on November 8, 1899, with 22 exhibits, 843 animals. The zoo's origins date back to 1895, with the establishment of the New york Zoological Society (NYZS), renamed Wild Conservation Scoiety (WCS) in 1993. Only the outer structure of the World of Reptiles remains much as it was in 1899. With the 1941 opening of African Plains, the Bronx Zoo was one of the first U.S. zoos to move away from cages and exhibit animals in naturalistic habitats.

Sweetie is a 7-year-old female Lab mix who came to Lollypop Farm from Rochester Animal Services in hopes of finding a new home. She weighs about 65 pounds.

Sweetie is eligible for our Seniors-for-Seniors program, so approved adopters age 60 and over can take her home free of charge! (That includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, and much more!)

Sweetie needs to go to an adult-only home. If there are any dogs in the household, she will need to meet them before going home.

FWC releases female panther rescued as kitten in 2011

Biologists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) released a female Florida panther Thursday night at the Picayune Strand State Forest in Collier County.
The panther and its brother had been raised at the White Oak Conservation Center in Yulee since they were 5 months old. The FWC rescued the two panthers as kittens in September 2011 near the Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed in northern Collier County after their mother was found dead.
“This panther is healthy and has grown to a size that should prepare her for life in the wild,” said Darrell Land, FWC panther team leader. “The goal in any panther rescue is to be able to release the animal back into the wild to aid in the recovery of this endangered species.”
The release was coordinated in consultation with partners from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Five other kittens of similar ages – three females and two males – have been raised at White Oak and released in south Florida.
“We are grateful for the work the staff at White Oak has done to prepare this panther and others for release,” said Land.
Biologists chose the Picayune Strand State Forest for the release of this panther after they evaluated the home ranges of other females in the region and found available space between them.
An estimated 100 to 160 adult and subadult panthers remain in south Florida.
Florida residents can support conservation efforts like the rescue and rehabilitation of this panther through the purchase of a panther license plate. Fees from license plate sales are the primary funding source for the FWC’s research and management of Florida panthers.
To report dead or injured panthers, call the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922) or #FWC or *FWC on a cell phone.
For more information on Florida panthers, go to www.floridapanthernet.org.

The Indri is the largest lemur still in existence. It can reach nearly 120 cm with legs full extended. The indri is well known for its loud, distinctive songs, which can last from 45 seconds to more than 3 minutes. The indri is an endangered species. The primary threats to its existence are habitat destruction and fragmentation due to slash and burn agriculture, fuelwood gathering, and logging. This kind of destruction occurs even in protected areas.
