Beavers are more than intriguing animals with flat tails and lustrous fur. American Indians called the beaver the "sacred center" of the land because this species creates rich habitats for other mammals, fish, turtles, frogs, birds and ducks. Since beavers prefer to dam streams in shallow valleys, much of the flooded area becomes wetlands. Such wetlands are cradles of life with biodiversity that can rival tropical rain forests. Almost half of endangered and threatened species in North America rely upon wetlands.

Breeding programs

A Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens fulgens) in Diergaarde Blijdorp. Blijdorp coordinates the international breeding program for this species.
Diergaarde Blijdorp participates in about 70 breeding programs and studbooks, and coordinates a couple of them, including the international breeding program for Red Pandas, EEPs for Asian Elephant, Komodo Dragon, Red-crowned and Siberian Crane, Visayan Warty Pig and Egyptian Tortoise, and the ESB for the Crowned Pigeons.[7]

Blijdorp also houses a botanical garden and manages both the Dutch National Bromelia Collection and the Dutch National Primula Collection.[8]

One of my all-time favorite films, because it's another solid comedy from the minds of John Landis ("Kentucky Fried Movie", "Animal House", "An American Werewolf In London"), Dan Aykroyd, and John Belushi (Both from Saturday Night Live, where the Blues Brothers originated)

I do own this film on DVD (Collectors' Edition - Theatrical and extended Director's Cut version!) and I enjoy watching it. (Sure, the soundtrack's probably available on iTunes - I hope, and I hope it's complete, but hey, I HAVE THE LP! I'm happy!)

One of these days, before I totally slim down, I should throw together a quick "Joliet" Jake Blues costume, since I somewhat resemble the late John Belushi (Well, if he had lived past age 33, and I'm not of Albanian lineage, but... Damnit, I have a black suit - I just need a thin black tie, the right watch, Ray-Bans, shoes, and the hat. Don't expect me to be doing backflips, though.)

Life can be a bitch when you you have to share your bed with two demanding females. :) Flickr in the background... Lucy who is in the foreground is being dog sat and is my secretary's dog... life is good when you get a double spoon. The other four (Buddy, Nick, Jeff, Champ) were in their basement kennel beds and Noah was sleeping by the bedroom door.

Noah isn't really a stranger anymore since I feed and water him regularly now. I can't feed him while Buddy is out as he gets jealous and chases Noah off even though he allows him to walk with us.

A manatee, also known as a 'seacow.' These air-breathing
herbivores are listed as a federally endangered species. Manatees are slow-moving and therefore unable to swim quickly away from boats; this often results in collisions that may cause injury or death to the creatures. In areas that are known manatee habitats, "no-wake" signs are posted requiring boaters to slow

Didn't take me long to ID this guy... He looked like a big woodpecker of some sort, and I found him on USGS in that catagory. This is the coolest looking bird that has ever entered my yard. Too bad he flew away before I could get some good shots. Out of the few I got, this was the best one.

Nala was the sole puppy of a pregnant dog who showed up at the shelter with severe injuries.

I used to live on Ferry Street, about 300 meters away from my Nepalese brothers. While they had a concrete highway to shelter them, I found myself in one of the old, Man buildings, those iron-shaped edifices across the street from the driving range in Jordan, about 300 meters away from the scintillating towers of West Kowloon station. I stayed in that block for three months.

It was the first time that I had ever shared a flat with a family, broken or otherwise. The father had a son, as well as a maid, who had a husband that hung around the flat too. There was one other guest in the room next to mine – I had the master bedroom; and, of course, who can forget that there was a dog. The dog, I think, was the best part of living there, because I had never had a dog before, and at last, one dream came true! The dog certainly was a handful, coursing through all 1,000 square feet of the flat like a flash, but verily I enjoyed watching it, if not wrestling it to the ground when we decided to play rough – my favorite move was to tackle it and then get it into a headlock, at which point I would give it a playful noogie. Yeah, the dog made our eclectic family complete.
