The Making of Harry Potter 29-05-2012

Hagrid's Hut
This is the home of Rubeus Hagrid, Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts and later Professor of Care of Magical Creatures. During Harry's third year his new post came with some additional benefits including the addition of a second room.
This set was actually built in two different scales. The larger scale set was used to correctly film characters of 'regular' size. A smaller scale set, replete with smaller-sized props was also built to make Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane) seem much larger.
Set decorators filled the hut with an abundance of cages, each containing peculiar real animals and items such as hairless cats, fruit bats and ostrich eggs.
Filmmakers relied on some clever tricks to make Hagrid seem larger than other characters. One of them was to have Hagrid sit in a tall chair nearest the camera during a scene, whilst other characters sat in shorter chairs farther from camera.
For the filming of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the crew reconstructed Hagrid's hut on location in Glencoe, Scotland - a village in the Northwest Scottish Highlands. Construction began in picture-perfect sunshine. As soon as director Alfonso Cuaron yelled 'ACTION!' it rained continuously for five entire weeks. Instead of becoming a production headache, the dreary, grey clouds actually energized the colours of the set.

People the world-over have been enchanted by the Harry Potter films for nearly a decade. The wonderful special effects and amazing creatures have made this iconic series beloved to both young and old - and now, for the first time, the doors are going to be opened for everyone at the studio where it first began. You'll have the chance to go behind-the-scenes and see many things the camera never showed. From breathtakingly detailed sets to stunning costumes, props and animatronics, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides a unique showcase of the extraordinary British artistry, technology and talent that went into making the most successful film series of all time. Secrets will be revealed.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides an amazing new opportunity to explore the magic of the Harry Potter films - the most successful film series of all time. This unique walking tour takes you behind-the-scenes and showcases a huge array of beautiful sets, costumes and props. It also reveals some closely guarded secrets, including facts about the special effects and animatronics that made these films so hugely popular all over the world.

Here are just some of the things you can expect to see and do:
- Step inside and discover the actual Great Hall.
- Explore Dumbledore’s office and discover never-before-seen treasures.
- Step onto the famous cobbles of Diagon Alley, featuring the shop fronts of Ollivanders wand shop, Flourish and Blotts, the Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, Gringotts Wizarding Bank and Eeylops Owl Emporium.
- See iconic props from the films, including Harry’s Nimbus 2000 and Hagrid’s motorcycle.
- Learn how creatures were brought to life with green screen effects, animatronics and life-sized models.
- Rediscover other memorable sets from the film series, including the Gryffindor common room, the boys’ dormitory, Hagrid’s hut, Potion’s classroom and Professor Umbridge’s office at the Ministry of Magic.

Located just 20 miles from the heart of London at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the very place where it all began and where all eight of the Harry Potter films were brought to life. The Studio Tour is accessible to everyone and promises to be a truly memorable experience - whether you’re an avid Harry Potter fan, an all-round movie buff or you just want to try something that’s a little bit different.

The tour is estimated to take approximately three hours (I was in there for 5 hours!), however, as the tour is mostly self guided, you are free to explore the attraction at your own pace. During this time you will be able to see many of the best-loved sets and exhibits from the films. Unique and precious items from the films will also be on display, alongside some exciting hands-on interactive exhibits that will make you feel like you’re actually there.

The magic also continues in the Gift Shop, which is full of exciting souvenirs and official merchandise, designed to create an everlasting memory of your day at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London.

Hogwarts Castle Model - Get a 360 degree view of the incredible, hand sculpted 1:24 scale construction that features within the Studio Tour. The Hogwarts castle model is the jewel of the Art Department having been built for the first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It took 86 artists and crew members to construct the first version which was then rebuilt and altered many times over for the next seven films. The work was so extensive that if one was to add all the man hours that have gone into building and reworking the model, it would come to over 74 years. The model was used for aerial photography, and was digitally scanned for CGI scenes.

The model, which sits at nearly 50 feet in diameter, has over 2,500 fibre optic lights that simulate lanterns and torches and even gave the illusion of students passing through hallways in the films. To show off the lighting to full effect a day-to-night cycle will take place every four minutes so you can experience its full beauty.

An amazing amount of detail went into the making of the model: all the doors are hinged, real plants are used for landscaping and miniature birds are housed in the Owlery. To make the model appear even more realistic, artists rebuilt miniature versions of the courtyards from Alnwick Castle and Durham Cathedral, where scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone were shot.

North American River Otter (Lontra canadensis)

The river otter, a member of the weasel family, is equally versatile in the water and on land. The otter establishes a burrow close to the water's edge in river, lake, swamp, coastal shoreline, tidal flat, or estuary ecosystems. Their dens have many tunnel openings, one of which generally allows the otter to enter and exit the body of water. Female otters give birth in these underground burrows, producing litters of one to six young. North American river otters, like most predators, prey upon the species that are the most readily accessible. Fish is a favored food among the otters, but they also consume various amphibians, turtles, and crayfish. There have been instances of river otters eating small mammals, as well. The range of the North American river otter has been significantly reduced by habitat loss, beginning with the European colonization of North America. In some regions, though, their population is controlled to allow the trapping and harvesting of otters for their pelts. River otters are very susceptible to environmental pollution, which is a likely factor in the continued decline of their numbers. A number of reintroduction projects have been initiated to help stabilize the reduction in the overall population. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_river_otter

I stopped this morning on my drive home - north up Vancouver Island, from Swartz Bay to Nanaimo, a familiar route - to visit the St. Ann's Church, Quamichan - Duncan, BC. For many years we (JoJo's Emporium) have been merchants at the music festival nearby at Providence Farm. The Quamichan cemetery has been on my radar for nearly a decade. An uncertain early sun struggled through high cloud. I walked over the damp grass, making barely a sound. I was struck by the number of children - my heart broke and was lifted, moment after moment. For an hour, I drifted among the graves. The adage applied: time out of mind (“That through time out of mind there were wont many diverse ships to come in to the said haven” - 1432 ). Someone's hat marks their resting place - and it felt like a place of rest. For an hour, St. Ann's cemetery became respite from the overload of our new century. A faded red bandana wrapped around a cross - animals and symbols - names and dates - slowly returning to the earth. Eagles and wolves. Totems. Accumulation. One grave marker said it all - Love Always.

...our friend Rick, and a robotic banana. Ok... ready? It started out just like any normal day. We knew of a game and we were gonna play it. Then, out of nowhere our friend Rick called and said "Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, Never gonna run around and desert you!!!!!" Did I mention his last name was Astley?=)

HA! Take that Sarah! And... any other innocent bystanders that just got Rickrolled. I made the mistake of doing this once before and introducing Sarah to the concept. Two problems with that. First, she LIKES 80s music. So she went online right then and bought the fracking MP3 from Amazon. Secondly she thinks just randomly playing it with me in the room constitutes Rickrolling me. I keep telling her she has to TRICK me into playing it. So now the score is 2-0.=D

On another note, what's with all the "barefoot dancing" searches all the sudden? I've seen a lot of those in my stats for this shot. With all the barefoot modern dance and belly dancing shots I'm surprised this one even shows up in those.

Here's an interesting cat eye color: BLUE!

BACKSTORY: Dave & Lacey brought over a kitten for Clint & Carolyn to try out. This poor kitten did not fit into our family. He was terrified of Clint, somewhat scared of Carolyn, and basically was ONLY interested in hiding behind piles of clutter large enough that human beings can't get to him. Completely anti-social and a nervous wreck. So 2 days later, we gave the kitten back to Dave & Lacey, as Lacey had stated we could if we didn't like it. He ultimately found a new home with other animals and kids and we hear the kitten was much happier and doing well. And he's probably still alive, too, which is more than we can say for poor little Beavis. Dave & Lacey's kid nicknamed the kitten Runny, because he kept running away, but he did eventually get a real name. We never found out what it was, and it doesn't really matter. Look at his feet shaking! This guy was an intellectual wimp. He had no place in our household. We require strong cats.

Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina) - Rollins Savanna, Lake County Forest Preserve District, near Grayslake, IL - 5 June 2011

My memory says that this turtle measured ~18" long head-to-tail. I sent the images to a naturalist at LCFPD for identification. In addition to the name, she added that these turtles spend most of their lives sitting on the bottom of rivers and ponds. This out-of-water wandering is likely to find a place to build a nest and lay eggs. This turtle is probably a female looking for such a place.

Smithsonian's National Zoo’s Twin Andean Bear Cubs Appear Healthy and Thriving
animal pound
Photo Credit: Beth Branneu, Smithsonian's National Zoo

In this photo: Animal Keeper Karen Abbott holds one of the 8-week-old cubs during its first veterinary exam.

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo’s eight-week-old Andean bear cubs received a clean bill of health today from Zoo veterinarians. The veterinary team performed a complete physical exam Feb. 20, which includes: listening to the cubs’ hearts and lungs; checking their mouth, eyes, legs, feet and genital area; and feeling their bellies. The cubs also received the first of a series of routine vaccines. Although it is difficult to determine the sex at such a young age when genitalia have not fully developed, the cubs appear to be male and female. The larger cub weighs 10.1 pounds; the smaller weighs 9.2 pounds.

The cubs were born Dec. 14 and have spent the past two months bonding with their mother, Billie Jean, in a den near the American Trail exhibit. Animal care staff and the public have had the unique opportunity to watch Billie Jean give birth, nurture her cubs, and watch them play and grow via the live Andean Bear Cub Cam on the Zoo’s website. The information gathered from watching their behavior will be shared with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums for the benefit of other institutions that exhibit and want to breed this species. The family’s public debut will take place later this spring.

To follow the bears’ progress, watch them on the live webcam, read updates from the Andean bear keepers and check for news on the Zoo’s Twitter feed and Facebook page with the hashtag #cubwatch.

Andean bears—also known as spectacled bears—are listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species, and it is estimated that there are only 2,000 left in their natural habitat.

Indian Elephant (Elephas maximus indicus)
animal pound
Elephants, being large animals, require much food. In the wild, they consume up to 600 lbs. of food (grass, vines, leaves, bark) and 30 gallons of water daily. In the zoo, their food is more nutritious (hay, grasses, fruits) and they eat about 150 lbs. daily. Elephants are herbivorous. The gestation period is 607-641 days (20 to 21 months) and one or sometimes two are born. At birth the young weigh about 200 pounds and stand about three feet tall at the shoulder. The young are weaned in about 2 years, and their rate of growth, the age at which they reach puberty, their life span, and their gerontic progression is similar to that of man. Elephants live to be about 70 years old.

Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis)
animal pound
The Giraffe is the tallest animal in the world. Males may be 16-18 feet tall and weigh up to 2,000 pounds. Females are usually lighter and about two feet shorter. The giraffe's front legs are only slightly longer than the back ones, the height of the fore part of the body being largely due to the heavy muscular development of the base of the neck. The long neck has the usual seven vertebrae of most mammals, although each is greatly elongated. The giraffe's soup-plate-sized hooves are used as offensive weapons, usually in the defense of the calves. The powerful kick from the front feet can kill a lion.
