This is the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley, West Midlands.

The museum was established in 1975, and the first buildings moved here in 1976. Since then a 26 acre site has been developed, with the unique conditions of living and working in the Black Country from the mid 19th century to early 20th century.

It is off Tipton Road in Dudley.

Path to the right to Dudley Canal Trust Boat Trips

We never got to go down there as we decided to head through the last section of the village, then went around the Canal Arm instead.

Area on the left is a Work in Progress.

Up here is the Animal Trap Works.

The Trap Shop

Sidebotham’s Trap Works, originally constructed in Wednesfield, near Wolverhampton in 1913, is a typical example of a small purpose built factory of the period.

Wednesfield was a major centre for the manufacture and worldwide export of small animal traps. The stencils hanging from the Belfast Truss roof were used to label the packing cases with destinations of ports in Australia, Africa, South America and many other far-flung destinations.

The stamping, pressing and punching machines are driven by lineshafting from a single cylinder gas engine of 1906, built by Tangye’s of Smethwick.

The forge hearth was used to make the springs which operated the traps and parts were assembled on benches using the hand-operated fly presses, before being painted or ‘blacked’ in tanks by the canalside wall and packed for delivery.

She somehow managed to get her collar around her waist. (Do cats have waists? Her torso then.) When I came home from work she backed away from me and I couldn't figure out why - turns out she just couldn't stand up properly! You know how cats are when you tie a sock around their middles, right? (You don't? What?) Anyway, after I stopped laughing and taking photos of her I helped her out of the collar. I'm such a good kitty mama.

Aliens, moving North
animal species
Female wasp spider (Argiope bruennichi), one of the biggest European spiders. Originally from the Mediterranean they are moving up North last decennia. Possibly it has something to do with the global earth warming. The first observation of this species in the Netherlands for example was in 1980. Yesterday, i've seen 5 of this wasp spiders (in Belgium, where they are protected by law). Very impressive, the females are a lot bigger than the males. The males often loose their life or some legs while mating. "After they lost their package of sperm, they are used and useless", the spider women (photo) said to me.

20100913 - Lemonjello attempting takeover of Oranjello's spot (2m51s) - MVI_2220 -- CUT OFF ON FLICKR, WATCH ON YOUTUBE!!

Lemonjello attempting one of his "takeovers" of Oranjello's spot. He comes up, pretending to lick, but inserting bites in the licks. The trick is to pretend you're licking, so that the other cat doesn't fight back, but then to bite, but then when the other cat fights back, to lick again. This is his way of riding the edge, hoping to annoy Oranjello into leaving without having to actually fight him.

After awhile, the action slows down, so I unleash a loud scream which a) makes it funny, b) makes Lemonjello [the wuss] leave right away, and c) makes Oranjello leave after some consternation.

Winner: Clint.

The National Fire Dog Monument was created to recognize the incredible contributions that accelerant detection canines (arson dogs) make in keeping communities safe. These dogs do not ask for anything in return after risking their lives to reduce the negative impact of arson in their communities.

The life size bronze monument depicts a firefighter looking down at his canine partner who in turn is looking up at his partner ready to work. This incredible monument, From Ashes to Answers, was sculpted by 22 year old artist and Colorado firefighter, Austin Weishel. The bronzing process is being completed by BRONZE SERVICES FINE ART FOUNDRY in Loveland, CO.

The monument traveled from Denver, CO to Washington D.C. for placement at D.C. Fire Station #3 where the general public will be able to view it. The National Fire Dog Monument road show; is co-sponsored by State Farm and the American Humane Association. The monument made stops at state capitals along the way to D.C. as a way to recognize the contributions of first responders and their canine partners.
