Disease, explanation, solution

Diabetes has tripled since the 1980's. Apparently it is the most common chronic disease in the U.S. today and many people are not diagnosed. So we can expect lots more to find themselves in the same boat as me, especially now that the medical establishment has lowered the criteria where they can call you diabetic. In 2000 they lowered the fasting blood sugar threshold number from 140 mg/dl to 126 mg/dl. They also created a new category of 110 mg/dl to 125 mg/dl as an interim period. This is because they discovered that damage on a micro-vascular level was already happening at those levels. Even so the standard blood test still doesn't catch people who are glucose intolerant because it only tests fasting blood plasma rates. If you have hypoglycemic issues, you likely have fluctuating blood sugar issues after eating a meal high in starch or sugar and this will produce insulin issues just as diabetes does. That's where that term sugar shock comes in. I've been hypoglycemic all my adult life and I'm only being flagged now.

The book The Diabetes Solution was my go to book for the basics about handling this condition and it was a very good science based introduction, though it is more focused on people who are already using insulin. I also wanted to know more about the science behind insulin and why our nutrition assumptions were so ass backward. In Good Calories, Bad Calories, everything became clear and the whole controversy around nutrition fell into place too. Diet is possibly the most contentious subject I've stumbled upon. It was also through this book that I realized that I was going to have to give up trying to save the planet from being trashed by livestock, by eating low on the food chain, as Frances Moore Lappe so famously suggested in Diet For A Small Planet. And then there are those who want to serve their animal loving ideals, but all those fake meats and alternative FrankenSoy foods are just plain dishonest because they are misleading and add another layer of calculations to find out how much carbs you are actually eating. And if you are going to promote a plant based diet it will likely be high in carbs—otherwise it will be too low in protein. Plus current book I am reading says those soy derivatives mess with your thyroid. There are still vegetarian dishes I will cook, but I will have to modify the starch intake. I did find out that I can offset a meal high in carbs and hitting a glucose reading of 132 mg/dl, with exercise which will bring it down to 84 mg/dl. It doesn't have to be super strenuous, yoga will do, but it has to go on for a while. Ninety minutes is good. An hour will probably work.

I was lucky to have arrived at this point when the Paleo diet was in full swing because it gave me The Primal Blueprint Cookbook which is not only helping me with the whole pre-diabetes dilemma of what to eat, but has recipes that are much easier to cook and take less time than my vegetarian dishes. It is also saving my relationship because every dish I've made from it has been delicious. Catherine wants to be vegetarian again, but she is relenting because her doctor's want her protein intake to be quite high. I've been playing it safe by cooking only chicken dishes, bacon for bacon bits and vegetables, but soon I will venture into the beef ones. More on the Primal Blueprint here. He's not as out there as the wild game/no cultivated foods Paleo people so is easier to live with.

Pink-tailed worm lizard

These really do look like worms - they are scarcely thicker than an earthworm - and they really do have pink tails. This one was also quite torpid on a cold day, and made no effort to escape.

The species is listed as "vulnerable" but not "endangered" (see here). This was the first one I have seen, though they are apparently not that uncommon locally - just idly turned over a small rock while waiting for the sunset, and there is was.

Yukon Llama

Some cool extinct animals images:

Yukon Llama
extinct animals
Image by Bruce McKay Yellow Snow Photography
The llama (Lama glama) is a South American camelid, widely used as a pack and meat animal by Andean cultures since pre-hispanic times.
The height of a full-grown, full-size llama is between 1.7 meters (5.5 ft) and 1.8 meters (6 ft) tall at the top of the head. They can weigh between approximately 130 kilograms (280 lb) and 200 kilograms (450 lb). At birth, a baby llama (called a cria) can weigh between 9.1 kilograms (20 lb) and 14 kilograms (30 lb). Llamas are very social animals and like to live with other llamas as a herd. Overall, the fiber produced by a llama is very soft and is naturally lanolin free. Llamas are intelligent and can learn simple tasks after a few repetitions. When using a pack, llamas can carry about 25% to 30% of their body weight for several miles.[1]
Llamas appear to have originated from the central plains of North America about 40 million years ago. They migrated to South America and Asia[citation needed] about 3 million years ago. By the end of the last ice age (10,000–12,000 years ago) camelids were extinct in North America.[1] As of 2007, there were over 7 million llamas and alpacas in South America and, due to importation from South America in the late 20th century, there are now over 100,000 llamas and 6,500–7,000 alpacas in the US and Canada.[2] (Wikipedia)

20060914 - Misfit & another snake - 106-0695 - flinging it
video of animals
Image by Rev. Xanatos Satanicos Bombasticos (ClintJCL)
Here it looks like Misfit is trying to fling the snake away. Of course, in reality, he's trying to keep it around so he can savage it. It's like a worm, only more fun!

For video of Misfit playing with the snake: www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqwQUGvDiQU

Back-story: We noticed Misfit had something, and it was a snake! He dropped it into his water fountain, and we had to take it apart. We let him play with it for awhile, then put it in a bottle. The bottle drove him crazy -- he attacked the movement within every 5 minutes for days. It was his new favorite toy -- the pet of our pet. So we kept the snake in captivity for a week or so. He was not interested in our house crickets, which we joked that Misfit caught for him. After a week, it not only needed probably needed food, but also stank, so we released it. It did need to be "watered" a few times during the week, too, which no doubt increased the stink-power.

Misfit, snake.

I just wanted to take a moment and thank the staff at Lollypop Farm for helping me meet my cat Buddy. I adopted him in November, 2011, and my only regret is not sharing these photos sooner! He was 11 months when I adopted him, and now at a little over 2 years, he is doing wonderfully. He is the coolest, funniest cat I have ever had. Every time I turn my key in the door, I can hear him purring as he lays up against the door on his back. He seems to be fascinated with everything I do. He likes to help me put my contacts in, in the morning, help me paint the house, and pay bills on the computer. What a great little companion!

Thank you again to the staff for all that you do!

Hello!!

We adopted Duchess from you last weekend, and wanted to tell you that she is doing great, and we love her sooo much!! She is sweet, affectionate, and quite playful. Despite her regal bearing, we find her to be very laid back and down to earth, so we decided to name her after a current duchess who embodies those qualities, and call her Cate (we went with the C spelling because it seemed cuter and somehow more....catlike).

She is exploring her new home, and getting along well with new roommate Samuel (I think he might be a bit smitten with her). She comes running to me when I call for her, and when I had a really trying week at work, she cuddled with me every evening and put her little head on my shoulder and purred. Just the therapy I needed. :)

Here are some pics of her in her new home (and some of the finches I adopted from you back in January- they are also doing really well). Thank you so much for bringing her into our lives, and thank you for all the great work that you do!!

Hello,

Even though it has been a couple years since we adopted Stewie, who is now 3 (never changed his name because it was SO perfect!), we wanted to give you an update and share some photos with you! I grew up in Honeoye Falls and my family has adopted pets from Lollypop Farm since my childhood, so naturally when my husband and I decided to adopt a cat, we made the trip from Brooklyn to Lollypop! Stewie is now an indoor cat, with some occasional outside adventures in Honeoye Falls and Long Island and we don't even remember what our lives were like before him! We love him so much! He is such a good little buddy! He is one of the friendliest cats that people have ever encountered. He loves everyone! Kids, dogs, cats, he's even made cat haters LOVE him! He meets us at the door just like a dog and cuddles up at night. He is an amazing addition to our family and even as I write this, he is curled up next to me on the couch :) I can't imagine how he ended up at Lollypop Farm at 1 year old, but I'm happy he made his way into our lives!

Thank you!!!

The National Fire Dog Monument was created to recognize the incredible contributions that accelerant detection canines (arson dogs) make in keeping communities safe. These dogs do not ask for anything in return after risking their lives to reduce the negative impact of arson in their communities.

The life size bronze monument depicts a firefighter looking down at his canine partner who in turn is looking up at his partner ready to work. This incredible monument, From Ashes to Answers, was sculpted by 22 year old artist and Colorado firefighter, Austin Weishel. The bronzing process is being completed by BRONZE SERVICES FINE ART FOUNDRY in Loveland, CO.

The monument traveled from Denver, CO to Washington D.C. for placement at D.C. Fire Station #3 where the general public will be able to view it.
