Kingsnake; New Orleans, LA

The Kingsnake calls the swamp or bayou areas of New Orleans, LA home - although this particular one was in captivity. Many thanks to Flickr member Kayak Steve for identifying the snake species for me! After completing some additional research into the various subspecies of Kingsnakes I believe the snake in this photo is a Speckled Kingsnake (Lampropeltis getulus holbrooki). The "king" in their name refers to their taste for other snakes and their ability to overpower other snakes.

Health Update on Nanook

Nanook wants to thank everyone of you! He started to eat on Saturday night, it was just a little bit but now he's scarfing down food like there's no tomorrow. He is off of his doggie meds and back to his normal routine. He is responding to his name, he's sleeping in his den during the day like usual, going out for walks and so forth. We still don't know what caused him to be deathly ill, we assume goose poop since that's his number one favortie snack on the farm (now there's a new theory that it might have been otter poop--please be careful of the otters, they are carrying a very dangerous bacteria this year and has sickened a lot of animals around town). I just want to thank everyone of you for keeping Nanook in your thoughts and prayers, he is safely "out of the woods" or so to speak. You guys are the best support group ever! this photo is best viewed large

He did seem to enjoy the cat toys that provided shelter a bit more than other cats, since his cowardice made him want shelter more.

BACKSTORY: Dave & Lacey brought over a kitten for Clint & Carolyn to try out. This poor kitten did not fit into our family. He was terrified of Clint, somewhat scared of Carolyn, and basically was ONLY interested in hiding behind piles of clutter large enough that human beings can't get to him. Completely anti-social and a nervous wreck. So 2 days later, we gave the kitten back to Dave & Lacey, as Lacey had stated we could if we didn't like it. He ultimately found a new home with other animals and kids and we hear the kitten was much happier and doing well. And he's probably still alive, too, which is more than we can say for poor little Beavis. Dave & Lacey's kid nicknamed the kitten Runny, because he kept running away, but he did eventually get a real name. We never found out what it was, and it doesn't really matter. Look at his feet shaking! This guy was an intellectual wimp. He had no place in our household. We require strong cats.
