The only time I've ever felt intimidated by zoo animals was yesterday on the Brookfield Zoo's Salt Creek Trail, which takes you away from the crowds and into the woods for a stroll. At the point where the trail passes a corner of the wolf habitat, we came upon four mean-eyed wolves, which were separated from us by only few feet and some suddenly-not-so-impassable-seeming chain link.
