Two-Toed Sloth

Leander the two-toed sloth enjoys a tasty platter of his favourite foods at ZSL London Zoo.
Joining the Zoo's Rainforest Life exhibit, which is already home to a female sloth, Marilyn, Leander moved to ZSL London Zoo from Germany as part of a conservation breeding programme.

Leander’s name originates from the Greek word for ‘lion’, but keepers have noticed he’s a little shyer than his moniker would suggest.

Welcoming the new addition with a tasty dish, keeper Tegan McPhail has high hopes for his future at the Zoo: “We’re really hoping that Leander will hit it off with our female sloth Marilyn.

“Although he’s a bit shy at the moment, he’s a young and handsome chap, so we’re hoping she’ll fall for his charms and we’ll be celebrating some more new arrivals in the future.”

London Zoo is the world's oldest scientific zoo. It was opened in London on 27 April 1828 and was originally intended to be used as a collection for scientific study. It was eventually opened to the public in 1847. Today it houses a collection of 755 species of animals, with 16,802 individuals, making it one of the largest collections in the United Kingdom. The zoo is sometimes called Regent's Zoo.

It is managed under the aegis of the Zoological Society of London (established in 1826) and is situated at the northern edge of Regent's Park, on the boundary line between City of Westminster and Camden (the Regent's Canal runs through it). The Society also has a more spacious site at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire to which the larger animals such as elephants and rhinos have been moved. As well as being the first scientific zoo, ZSL London Zoo also opened the first Reptile house (1849), first public Aquarium (1853), first insect house (1881) and the first children's zoo (1938).

ZSL receives no state funding and relies on 'Fellows', 'Friends', 'Members', entrance fees and sponsorship to generate income.

Happy Tails: Sweet Potato
animal health
Hi Lollypop Farm,

We adopted Sweet Potato, a 10 year old female Brittany, on August 19, 2012. Sweet Potato, we knew, came with some serious health issues, such as a very significant heart murmur, etc., but we knew we had to adopt her anyway. She moved into our hearts and home like she had lived with us forever. Two days after we brought her home, we noticed she was sneezing. We quickly got her in for her vet check, and she had developed pneumonia. The amazing thing was that she pulled through, grew her beautiful coat back, and become such a joy to each family member in our home. She was like an angel from heaven, a doggie blessing to us. On March 19, 2013, Sweet Potato sadly passed away, taking part of our hearts with her. She had a cancerous tumor on her liver that hemorrhaged. We just wanted to let you know that we think that she was the most perfect dog ever, and our lives were immensely touched by her sweet life. The information that was on her cage at Lollypop Farm the day we adopted her said something like, “Sweet Potato...her name is what she is—sweet.”

Thank you for allowing us to adopt Sweet Potato. We miss her dearly.

Sincerely,
Stephanie S.

Adopt James

James is 8 years old and in great health. James is a gorgeous sweetheart that just wants to be loved. He is definitely a lover, not a fighter. He would be happy in pretty much any home as long as there is attention and of course FOOD.

UPDATE: As of 11/17/08 poor James has been at the shelter for one year. Can you find it in your heart to take this big, lovable guy home?

Chacoan Peccary
extinct animals
Image by Princess Stand in the Rain
The endangered Chacoan peccary (Catagonus wagneri) is a species of peccary found in the dry shrub habitat or Chaco of Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina. About 3000 exist in the world. It is believed to be the closest living relative to the extinct genus Platygonus.
The Chacoan peccary has the unusual distinction of having been first described in 1930 based on fossils and was originally thought to be an extinct species.[1] In 1975 the animal was discovered to still be alive and well in the Chaco region of Paraguay. The species was well known to the native people, but it took a while for scientists to rediscover its existence. It is known locally as tagua.

Edy Alvarez 1

Edy Alvarez is student at CSUN and a student activist who focuses on issues relating to the green party.

Transcribed Interview: The Green Party in California was established in 1990-1991, we modeled ourselves after the german green party after they established themselves, we were able to register 100,000 voters and we're now a ballot-qualified greparty in california. We've been able to qualify numerous states here in the U.S. The four key-pillars are: The first one is grassroots democracy, we get voters from the ground-up not top-down, we don't get money from corporations, we're funded by regular people and is local and self-funded, the second pillar is environmental stewardship, finding ways to reducing environmental degradation. combating global warming, finding solutions for sustainability for future generations. we are destroying ecosystems at the moment and many species are going extinct, the third key pillar is social justice, this refers to having a living wage compared to minimum wage, a living wage would be .50 now, animal rights, reducing animal experimentation and finding a better way to treat animals, increase living standards, full-employment for all, we have the money and resources, there are empty factories right now that need workers, tuition-free college, once again we have the money but' its the way funds are allocated, there are different reasons we've been squeezed out...healthcare for all, e.g, single payer, not Obama-care which mandates you to buy healthcare from a private insurance companies, healthcare means the government provides for healthcare for all citizens. The fourth pillar is non-violence and an end to wars, e.g, going to iraq on false premises and not finding nuclear weapons. How does this relate to CSUN students? Background on the green party being excluded in the united states and around the world: In the late 80's the League of Women voters used to hold the presidential debates every four years and then in 1988-1992 the democrats and republicans came together to form a corporation that would sponsor the debates that makes it impossible for other third party candidates to register and its why you don't see other candidates besides the democrats and republicans. Here in california we passed prop-14 which means you get to vote for either party but only the two top-vote getters are able to move-on and so you can have two democrats, or two republicans or one of which each and no other third party candidates. The assembly just passed a vote to eliminate write-in candidate, which means you can't write-in candidates if you don't agree with the candidates on the ballot. This brings me here to csun, where there is debate between incumbents Howard Berman and Brad Sherman. The way incumbents try to operate is to stifle competition and not debate if there is any third-party candidates and it amounts to an exclusionary undemocratic process. I'm trying to get a third party candidate at the CSUN debates, he is qualified congressional-candidate and is a former CSUN professor and I'm trying to get as much support as possible from everyone because if we can't get support at the local college level who can we have any support in california or at large, the U.S. audience.

Black Country Living Museum - Steep cobbled path, Animal Trap Works and Brockmoor Carters

Some cool animal rights images:

Black Country Living Museum - Steep cobbled path, Animal Trap Works and Brockmoor Carters
animal rights
This is the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley, West Midlands.

The museum was established in 1975, and the first buildings moved here in 1976. Since then a 26 acre site has been developed, with the unique conditions of living and working in the Black Country from the mid 19th century to early 20th century.

It is off Tipton Road in Dudley.

This is Brockmoor Carters.

Carter’s Yard

Horses provided the key to transport in the Black Country well into the twentieth century. They were used as draught animals to haul narrow boats loaded with goods on the canals, drag heavy coal carts and pull trams, carriages, milk floats, delivery wagons and fire engines.

Heavy horses, usually shires, like William at the Museum, were used for haulage in heavy industry. But the majority of work was done using ‘half leg’ or short legged shire cross breed horses to pull smaller two wheeled carts and canal boats as they were lighter to handle and cheaper to feed.

Trade horses were kept in fairly humble quarters in yards like this one across the Black Country.

The yard contains a stable which was carefully dismantled and moved from Ogley Hay Road at Burntwood in Cannock on the northern edge of the Black Country where it was built around 1900.

The stable fittings were donated from a stable in Handsworth Wood Road, Birmingham. The combined office and harness room are copied from buildings found in Netherton and a small feed store and simple corrugated iron lean-to cart shed complete the authentic assemblage of buildings in the yard.

On the gate it says Hauliers to John Folkes Lye Forge (Est. 1699)

Path to the right to Dudley Canal Trust Boat Trips

We never got to go down there as we decided to head through the last section of the village, then went around the Canal Arm instead.

Up ahead is a steep cobbled path.

Wheel chair on left.

Also the Darby Hand Chapel.

Up here is the Animal Trap Works.

The Trap Shop

Sidebotham’s Trap Works, originally constructed in Wednesfield, near Wolverhampton in 1913, is a typical example of a small purpose built factory of the period.

Wednesfield was a major centre for the manufacture and worldwide export of small animal traps. The stencils hanging from the Belfast Truss roof were used to label the packing cases with destinations of ports in Australia, Africa, South America and many other far-flung destinations.

The stamping, pressing and punching machines are driven by lineshafting from a single cylinder gas engine of 1906, built by Tangye’s of Smethwick.

The forge hearth was used to make the springs which operated the traps and parts were assembled on benches using the hand-operated fly presses, before being painted or ‘blacked’ in tanks by the canalside wall and packed for delivery.

Second-Freshest

A few nice facts about animals images I found:

Second-Freshest

It used to bother me a little -- OK, a lot -- that the Holsteins have such a blasé attitude about meat. They don't eat beef themselves, of course, but they really couldn't care less that I sometimes order a nice burger when I'm chaperoning them around.

I guess it's just one of those "same planet, different worlds" sort of deals. I think they're more freaked out by the fact that I'm eating in a small, enclosed, indoor space and I'm sitting down instead of standing. I don't "get" why they don't care I'm eating beef and they don't "get" why I'd leave myself so vulnerable to predators. *Shrug*

Onward. This, my pretties, is an In-N-Out Double Double, Monster Animal Style. It has the outward appearances of a fast-food burger in the sense that the meal cost me somewhere around six bucks (including beverage) and both the counter where I ordered it and the table where I ate it were made of some plasticky sort of composite material.

But that's where comparisons end. In-N-Out is like an attempt to reproduce a McDonalds meal at home. Nothing's frozen, nothing's been under a heat lamp, and everything's made to order...including the fries, cut fresh in the kitchen.

It's a little remarkable to see just how good a fast-food burger can be. The Double-Double is roughly equivalent to the Big Mac in basic architecture (tall double-patty burger). But all of the vegetables in the In-N-Out version are salad-fresh. They're cold and crunchy. The meat is more readily recognizable as meat. This is what McDonalds food would taste like if they really cared about ingredients.

(I must apply a minor point deduction for the fries. They were very good, but I wonder if In-N-Out hasn't switched to some sort of tree-huggy frying medium. They lacked the moist, glisteny snap of potatoes fried in an unhealthy liquid.)

The menu is simple and free of Clever Trademarks. Hamburger, Cheeseburger, Double-Double, Fries. And not a licensed character in sight. But they'll actually cook whatever you want, however you want it, and a "secret menu" simplifies the usual custom options. If you "monster animal-style" a double-double, they grill the onions until they've carmelized, fry the patty in mustard, and add extra pickles and sauce.

Alas, In-N-Out is something they only do in California, like topping oatmeal with avocado or electing any castmember from "Jingle All The Way" to high office. I've only eaten there three or four times. I try very very very hard to squeeze in time for a meal whenever I'm in San Francisco.

Mountain Goat (Oreamnos americanus)

It is a large-hoofed mammal found only in North America. Despite its vernacular name, it is not a member of Capra, the genus of true goats. It stays at high elevations and is a sure-footed climber, often resting on rocky cliffs that predators cannot reach. The mountain goat's feet are well-suited for climbing steep, rocky slopes, sometimes with pitches of 60 degrees or more, with inner pads that provide traction and cloven hooves that can be spread apart as needed. Also, the tips of their feet have dewclaws that are sharp to keep them from slipping. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountain_goat

The cutest little bear!
animal behavior
When we arrived I immediately saw this little guy off to the left. I had never seen a bear here (Lazy 5 Ranch) before and couldn't wait to visit.
He was in a very small enclosure and was doing the stereotypical behavior of bears that are bored/upset, which is pacing.
Of course I started asking questions and found out this is just temporary housing. He was living with Mom and Dad off site but Dad was not a happy bear with Junior around. So they did this quick fix and will build a better and more permanent home if they decide to keep him on exhibit. Judging by the response that day, he is very popular!

unusual behavior for them, i'd think. the female grosbeak was the first one to do this, typically perched on the oriole feeder, leaning over to grab seeds from the other feeder, then drinking the sugar water. i guess the other birds are starting to figure it out too, but no orioles this year.

This dazzling iridescent fossil of an 80-million-year-old ammonite measuring two feet in diameter was discovered near Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, (WHOOT!) and is a particularly rare example of an ancient sea creature that went extinct at the same time as most dinosaurs. The spectacular coloration is the result of millions of years of high temperatures and pressures acting on the animal's shell to create a gemstone known as an ammolite.

Gibbons are the small apes in the family Hylobatidae. The family is divided into four genera based on their diploid chromosome number: Hylobates (44), Hoolock (38), Nomascus (52), and Symphalangus (50). The extinct Bunopithecus sericus is a gibbon or gibbon-like ape which, until recently, was thought to be closely related to the Hoolock gibbons. Gibbons occur in tropical and subtropical rainforests from northeast India to Indonesia and north to southern China, including the islands of Sumatra, Borneo and Java.
Also called the lesser apes, gibbons differ from great apes (chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and humans) in being smaller and pair-bonded, in not making nests, and in certain anatomical details in which they superficially more closely resemble monkeys than great apes do. Gibbons are masters of their primary mode of locomotion, brachiation, swinging from branch to branch distances of up to 15 m (50 ft), at speeds as much as 56 km/h (35 mph). They can also make leaps of up to 8 m (27 ft), and walk bipedally with their arms raised for balance. They are the fastest and most agile of all tree-dwelling, non-flying mammals.

Gibbons are social animals. They are strongly territorial, and defend their boundaries with vigorous visual and vocal displays. The vocal element, which can often be heard for distances of up to 1 km, consists of a duet between a mated pair, their young sometimes joining in. In most species males, and in some also females, sing solos that attract mates as well as advertise their territory. The songs can make them an easy find for poachers who engage in the illegal wildlife trade and in sales of body parts for use in traditional medicine.
The gibbons' ball-and-socket joints allow them unmatched speed and accuracy when swinging through trees. Nonetheless, their mode of transportation can lead to hazards when a branch breaks or a hand slips, and researchers estimate that the majority of Gibbons fracture their bones one or more times during their lifetimes.
