Long-Legged House Centipede
animals names
This Centipede is named the House Centipede but it is not found in houses here.
It is more common in caves and forests but unusually it was found in this drain.
Many of it's legs had gone missing, especially on the left side, probably due to attack from a large predator.

Name: Scutigeromorpha > Scutigeridae > Scutigera sp.
Size: about as long as a man's palm
Location: Nirvana Memorial Park (cemetery), Tuaran, Sabah.

A very small bird, probably fallen from its nest. Looked as if asking "who are you, big guy, what's your name? I'm a small bird and, in a few days, I will learn how to fly in the sky. Will you come with me?" Nature is always fascinating to say the least!

The zoo trip turned out to be full of great photo ops, like this one of a Sumatran tiger sunning itself. Definitely a case where my telephoto lens paid off to bring the tiger closeup.

With a population estimated at less than 700 Sumatran tigers are classified as an endangered species. They exist in isolated groups across the island of Sumatra.

Comparatively small for a tiger, males weigh between 220 and 310lbs with a length of 89" while females weigh between 170 and 240lbs with a length of 91"

This oil painting of Dr. Norman Bethune performing surgery dates from 2000. The placard at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh states “Veils of color and specters of flora and fauna lightly obscuring the underlying picture, rendering it beautiful when it may be anything but.” Dr. Bethune (1890-1939) was a Canadian physician who became a Communist and joined with the Chinese in their fight against Japan in 1937. He invented the world’s first mobile medical unit, enabling the treatment of wounded during combat. Mao Tsedong wrote a commemorative article on Dr. Bethune in 1939, which became required elementary school reading during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976).

Hung Liu, a Chinese-American contemporary artist was born in 1948 in Changchun, China. She is, according to Wikipedia, an art professor at Mills College in Oakland, California.

“Her paintings and prints often make use of anonymous Chinese historical photographs, particularly those of women, children, refugees, and soldiers as subject matter. Liu's paintings—often large, drippy, and washed with layers of linseed oil—can be seen as critiques of the rigid academicism of the Chinese Socialist Realist style in which she was trained, as well as metaphors for the loss of historical memory. One of the first Chinese artists to study in the U.S., Liu's works represent the ongoing tension between emigration and immigration. Liu has received numerous awards, including two painting fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, and her work is represented in the permanent collections of major museums and private collections throughout the United States and Asia.” {from Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hung_Liu).

We're in South Africa, in the Madikwe Game Reserve. To our right, across
the fence, is Botswana. "People don't like driving along the fence," says
our guide, "but it's the best place to find wild dogs. They chase the
animals into the [electric] fence to stun them." On the other side is
farmland, with cows, protected by their own electric fence. The lions and
other predators can look across, but they can't eat.

Aimee and Vodka

A few nice names for animals images I found:

Aimee and Vodka
names for animals
We’d seen a poster outside the butchers in Castle Douglas (which, incidentally has the nicest sausages this side of the border so if you’re ever in the area, pay it a visit :D) for an ‘open day’ to raise money for a local donkey sanctuary and it had a photograph of a lovely fuzzy donkey who went by the name of Vodka on it.

It transpired that all three were rescues. Vodka, who had been imported to France from somewhere else, had been rescued from the meat trade, scared and unconfident, with her long shaggy coat all matted and muddy. A bar in Glasgow has sponsored her, I can’t remember the name of it right now, only that it had ‘Vodka’ in the title but I’m sure I’d seen her in an ad campaign once before, so it was extra nice to meet her. She was by far one of the friendliest donkeys I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and was VERY interested in Nigel. Her flag like ears pricked as she sniffed him and she was utterly transfixed.

Then there was Fergus, a tiny little jack who got very jealous when he was ignored for more than a minute. (remind you of anyone?) I can’t remember his history but regardless of what it was, he was adorable, if a little grumpy.

Aimee, I think was the name of the other jenny, a gorgeous little pinto who I only really saw the head and legs of as the rest of her was covered in a rug to help ease her sweet itch. She had been a racing donkey and had competed in several ‘Donkey Derbys’ before coming here. The cobs, who I never ‘met’ were grazing the muddy paddock in the background, blatantly ignoring everyone else

I picked up a leaflet with pictures of all the donkeys at this other sanctuary and their stories. There was also a section with some of the horses that would be going to the slaughterhouse in France shortly with prices and details about them. It was heartbreaking, seeing all these animals with such potential looking at their own demise. There were even two mares and foals, one was in foal at the same time as well. It said that they’d be going to Italy where it is legal to kill pregnant mares for meat.

I can’t even begin to put into words how wrong that is, I just can’t.

If I had the money, god, if only I had money.

Nasty Spider

Her full name is Hellspawn the Demon Spider from the Bowels of the Underworld where Satan will Keep Your Soul for all Eternity. She's a red trapdoor spider and she's very defensive. She is from the Idiopidae family, most likely. Possibly from the Gorgyrella genus. Can anyone confirm? Whatever she is, it is a commonly available trapdoor species in the hobby, as far as trapdoor spiders go, anyway.

She is also seen here:

Soweto visit in Johannesburg
names for animals
Some pictures of a trip to South Africa in Oktober 2011.

Taken with an Canon Eos 60D post processed with Adobe Lightroom 3.

Soweto is a lower-class-populated urban area of the city of Johannesburg in Gauteng, South Africa, bordering the city's mining belt in the south. Its name is an English syllabic abbreviation for South Western Townships. Formerly a separate municipality, it is now incorporated in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, Suburbs of Johannesburg.
The history of African townships south west of Johannesburg that would later form Soweto was propelled by the increasing eviction of Africans by city and state authorities. Africans had been drawn to work on the gold mines that were established after 1886. From the start they were accommodated in separate areas on the outskirts of Johannesburg, such as Brickfields (Newtown). In 1904 British-controlled city authorities removed African and Indian residents of Brickfields to an "evacuation camp" at Klipspruit municipal sewage farm (not Kliptown, a separate township) outside the Johannesburg municipal boundary, following a reported outbreak of plague. Two further townships were laid out to the east and the west of Johannesburg in 1918. Townships to the south west of Johannesburg followed, starting with Pimville in 1934 (a renamed part of Klipspruit) and Orlando in 1935.

Elephant seals are large, oceangoing mammals in the genus Mirounga, in the earless seal (Phocidae) family. There are 2 species: the Northern Elephant Seal (M. angustirostris) and the Southern Elephant Seal (M. leonina). Both were hunted to the brink of extinction by the end of the nineteenth century, but numbers have since recovered. The Northern Elephant Seal, somewhat smaller than its southern relative, ranges over the Pacific coast of the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The Southern Elephant Seal is found in the southern hemisphere on islands such as South Georgia, Macquarie Island, and on the coasts of New Zealand, South Africa, and Argentina in the Peninsula Valdés, which is the fourth largest elephant seal colony in the world.

Grant's Gazelle
animal species
Tsavo East, Kenya.

From Wikipedia -
The Grant's Gazelle (Nanger granti) is a species of gazelle. Its populations are distributed from northern Tanzania to southern Sudan and Ethiopia, and from the Kenyan coast to Lake Victoria. Its Swahili name is Swala Granti.

Grant's Gazelle is found in East Africa and lives in open grass plains and frequently found in shrublands; it avoids areas that have high grass where the visibility of predators is compromised. They also occur in semi-arid areas as well, and is relatively arid-adapted. They are migratory animals but travel in the opposite direction of most of the other ungulates like Thompson's gazelles, zebras and wildebeests which are more water dependant. They can subsist on vegetation in waterless, semiarid areas. Here they face little competition.

Grant’s gazelles are generally mixed feeders that both browse and graze. Their average diet consists of 65.8% browse and 34.3% graze. Rainfall in their habitats seem to be the determinant of their diets. The Grant's Gazelle's diet may also be responsible for the slow growth rates in the browsed plots. They get most of their moisture from the plants they eat so they don’t have to drink water often. Thus they can stay on the plains long after the rains end. From July to September, gazelles move deep into dense brush and wait for the next rains. They will eat red oats and small crunchy plants, which are avoided by the other ungulates. This allows the gazelles to survive in the brush during the dry season. Grant’s gazelles eat mainly dicotyledons during the dry season and grass in the wet season.

The most common predators of the Grant's Gazelle are Cheetahs and African Wild Dog. Humans also tend to hunt gazelles. In the Serengeti, Grant's Gazelle is a prey item but Thomson's gazelle is preferred by Cheetahs. However, in Nairobi National Park Grant's Gazelle is preferred over Thomson's Gazelle making it an important resource to the Cheetah. Jackals are major predators of fawns.

ENGLISH
The dorcas gazelle is a small ungulate found typically in the extensive deserts of North Africa, the Sinai peninsula, Palestine and Arabia; its colour is very close to that of the desert sands, and it has delicate silhouette and deeply ringed, lyre-shaped horns. The subspecies seen here in the zoo is the Western Sahara dorcas gazelle (Gazella dorcas neglecta), one of the breeds in greatest danger of extinction at present.

The dorcas gazelle was very numerous until relatively recently and large herds roamed the deserts in search of pasture and water. It had always been hunted for its meat by the nomadic peoples inhabiting the region, but the advent of firearms and motor vehicles has led to the decimation of these herds.

The Saharan Fauna Rescue Park was created in the province of Almería in 1971 in an attempt to save this gazelle and other Saharan species and has achieved notable success, to the extent that a number of these gazelles born at the Park have been sent to zoos, including the Barcelona zoo, and some have also been reintroduced into parks and nature reserves in North Africa.

CASTELLANO
