Vigil for Prospect Park Geese
facts about animals
The Humane Society of the United States, New York State Senator Eric Adams, and City Council Member Brad Lander joined about 75 people to hold vigil for Prospect Park's slaughtered geese by the lake on the southwest side of the park.

The event was organized by concerned community members through the "For the love of the geese in Prospect Park" facebook group.

The Humane Society of the United States Urges Halt to Goose Slaughter

NEW YORK (July 14, 2010) – The Humane Society of the United States calls on New York officials to immediately halt its program to kill resident Canada geese and work instead on a plan that will truly protect public safety and clears the geese from certain areas.

News outlets have reported that many New Yorkers are also distressed about the city’s contract with the U.S. Department of Agriculture which resulted in the recent killing of 400 resident Canada geese in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and includes plans to round up more geese this week.

“This inhumane, ineffective and costly contract is the wrong way to address the goose population,” said Patrick Kwan, New York state director for The HSUS. Scientists at the Smithsonian Institute have examined feather remains from the 2009 US Airways Flight 1549 bird strike and determined that the Canada geese involved were from a migrating population, not the local resident populations targeted by these roundups.

Many of the geese now being killed would never have been hatched if the city had adopted The HSUS’ recommendations in 2009 to implement a comprehensive program to render goose eggs unviable, along with other effective tactics.

Communities across the country have had tremendous success with such programs that include treating eggs so they don’t hatch, modifying habitats so they don’t attract geese, and using trained dogs to make geese fly elsewhere. A comprehensive, transparent and publicly supported management plan which includes these components is sorely needed to address the goose issue.

The HSUS offers extensive resources for developing programs to humanely reduce conflicts with geese and other wild animals.

Facts

• Airport safety programs can keep the flying public safe and can be humane. The best programs use long-term strategies to permanently reduce the conditions that attract geese to airports.

• Killing geese merely opens habitat for other geese to fill. The answer is to treat the problem at the source—make airports and surrounding areas undesirable habitat to the birds while preventing flock growth with egg addling programs.

• Federal law protects Canada geese; however, that only means that people cannot harm birds without US Fish and Wildlife Service permission.

... message header for photo above ... Boris Badenov, Natasha Fatale, and Fearless Leader.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boris_Badenov

Boris's missions range from trying to steal a secret rocket fuel formula to eliminating all television from the United States as part of Pottsylvania's various attempts to seize power.

Boris, who is thoroughly dedicated to (and takes delight in) all manners of nefarious deeds, would also sometimes engage in his own schemes, such as starting his own organized crime gang.

Separately from the television series, a commercial for the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show featuring Boris established that he was an active member of Local 12 of the Villains, Thieves, and Scoundrels Union. During this commercial, Boris also claims to be "the world's greatest no-goodnik."

Boris is also quite proud of the fact that the nicest thing Fearless Leader ever did for him was sending a picture of himself to Boris inscribed "Drop Dead — Fearless Leader".

The best part of eating fruits and vegetables in their seasons is the taste. There’s nothing like spring strawberries, summer peaches and fall squash.

The second best part? Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

We haven’t had winter squash around here since…well, last winter. Now we can’t stop eating it.

Lucky for us, there are so many more varieties of winter squash -- the possibilities are endless, but the truth is, a little salt and butter or olive oil is all any of them need to taste delicious right out of the oven.

Don’t be afraid to buy a new kind of gourd at the farmer’s market or store. Sometimes, the ugliest ones are the most delightful.

... 1 medium winter squash of choice
... 3 cups fresh spinach, kale or swiss chard leaves
... 4 cloves garlic
... 1 cup panko bread crumbs
... 1 egg
... 1t salt
... freshly ground pepper to taste
... mozzarella cheese (optional)

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Cut the squash in half lengthwise or in 1.5-in. slices, according to your preferred recipe. Place slices or the the halves upside down in a pan of shallow water and bake until soft (25 minutes for slices and more for larger halves). You should be able to easily pierce the squash with a fork.

Puree greens and garlic in a food processor. Combine greens mixture, egg, panko, salt and pepper in a bowl and mix thoroughly.

--- PUMPKIN SOUP IN ITS SHELL

Barbara Kingsolver’s book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, chronicling her family’s year-long locavore experience, was a combination of my favorite author and two of my favorite interests: gardening and cooking healthy food. I devoured the book and then several of the recipes in it.

This recipe for pumpkin soup, served in its shell, has become a family favorite. My kids (and guests) are thrilled when we bring the whole pumpkin to the table, remove the lid and ladle the soup right from the gourd.
.
.

... PUMPKIN SOUP

... 1 pie pumpkin, made for cooking (these are smaller than the ones sold for decorating)
... 1 can coconut milk
... 8oz. soy milk
... 32 oz. water or stock
... T salt
... t cinnamon
... t ginger
... freshly ground pepper to taste

Cut the top off the pumpkin and save it for the lid. Scoop out the seeds and save them for roasting. Place the pumpkin in a tin large enough to hold it. Fill the pumpkin with the stock or water, soy milk, salt and coconut milk. Cover the hole with a piece of tin foil and replace the lid. Bake the pumpkin at 375° for 1-2 hours, depending on its thickness. Occasionally open lid and check with a spoon, carefully scraping some inside flesh into the hot liquid.

Now here’s the tricky part. The pumpkin tends to collapse after an hour or so, which won’t ruin the soup, but will ruin the cool container! As a precaution, I pour the liquid into a pot and carefully scrape some of the insides of the pumpkin into the pot as well. I continue cooking the soup in the pot, so that the total cooking time adds up to about an hour. Add the spices and puree once the pumpkin flesh in the soup is soft. To serve, reheat the soup in the pot (and the pumpkin separately in the oven–the soup will take forever to heat if you try to heat it in the pumpkin in the oven), pour the soup into the pumpkin and serve with a ladle. Good luck!

Variation: Favorite fall squash soup

Pumpkin soup in its shell always gives my kids a thrill, but most weeks, I only have time to throw together a butternut squash soup that is just as yummy. I start with a whole butternut squash, which is the least unwieldy members of the squash family, if you ask me. I chop off the ends, peel it with a peeler and scoop out the insides with a spoon. With only a few more minutes of prep time and 40 minutes simmer time, the soup is ready.
.
.

--- BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP

... 1 butternut squash, peeled and roughly chopped
... 1 can coconut milk
... 8oz. soy milk
... 32 oz. water or stock
... T salt
... t cinnamon
... t ginger
... 1/4 cup cashews (optional)
... freshly ground pepper to taste
.
...........................

img code photo ... BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP

media.aish.com/images/wendy_butternut.jpg

...........................
.

Simmer all the ingredients for 40 minutes, until the squash can be easily pierced with a fork. Blend it with an immersion blender and serve (If you’re using the cashews, blend the soup in the blender).

And now for those seeds…
.
.

--- ROASTED PUMPKIN SEEDS

Toss the seeds with 2T melted butter and t salt. Roast for 45 minutes on 300 degrees, until golden brown.

This version of President Kennedy's Cuban Missile Crisis speech is somewhat rare, because it is complete and unedited. Usually only small bits and pieces of the speech are presented on television and in documentaries. But this is the entire 18-minute address from start to finish.

* Population: 18,000-20,000 (2002 figure)
* Lifespan: estimated to be around 40 years (1998 figure)
* Threats: Caught in fishing nets, human disturbance, and being tangled in marine pollution
* The flukes (tails) have a distinct pattern on the underside, much like our fingerprints
* The humpback whale breaches more frequently than other baleen whales
* The Pacific humpback's pectoral fins are white underneath & black on top..
* The Atlantic humpback's pectoral fins are white on both sides- which makes it easier for us to see them
* While in their breeding grounds- the whales do NOT eat!
* Some humpbacks feed in the Southern Ocean and go north to their reproductive areas!
* Can stay underwater for 30 minutes but often dives for much shorter periods of time, usually 5 to 10 minutes
* Humpbacks emit high frequency "clicks" reaching 30,000 Hz
* The males produce, in frequencies between 20 and 9,000 Hz, songs that are the longest and the most varied in all the animal kingdom, with repeated sequences about 15 minutes long
* When they are in cold waters, the humpback whale eats 2 tons of fish and planktonic crustaceans a day, in 2 to 4 meals

Kaiser is a 9-year-old male black Labrador retriever mix who weighs 50 pounds. He’s at Lollypop Farm for a second time because his owner was having personal problems.

This handsome fellow is a favorite of both staff and volunteers at the shelter. Kaiser is quite active for his age, so don't label him a couch potato! He would be happiest in a home without small animals, because he has a history of chasing them non-stop. He would also like a home with children over the age of 16 due to his age and the fact that he has no history of living with them.

Kaiser is available in the Seniors-for-Seniors program, so adopters age 60 and older can take him home free of charge.

Sweet Kaiser has been at Lollypop Farm since the beginning of November and is hoping to find a Home for the Holidays. No one wants to spend the holidays away from friends and family, and that includes all the pets at Lollypop Farm.

Kemp's ridley sea turtle

Montezuma, Costa Rica.

It was a lazy afternoon in the happy hippie village Montezuma. me and my friends were on the beach, coming in and out of the water, getting suntanning, reading books and just being lazy. i was in the water when suddenly my friend shouted my name and called me from out far to get out of the water, concerned i ran out and saw her (no mistake- her) . a female sea turtle making it way to the sandy beach. she was on daylight, totally not acording to books. after one hour of digging she laied her eggs, coverd them up and made her way back to the great endless pacific ocean- what an amazing hero she is.

trying to discover what species the sea turtle was- i ran into it (http://www.greatturtlerace.com/) and came in contact with the in the sea turtles institute in Michmoret (Israel) and they helped me to find out what she was.

In addition of her being out on the beach on daylight, she was off season and out of her usual Habitat - it was a miracle we saw her, once in a life experience.

Kemp's Ridley sea turtle is a Critically Endangered species(!) you can find here few details on it.

Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle
©Cynthia Rubio & NPS

Critically Endangered:
Kemp’s Ridley turtles are one of the most seriously endangered of all sea turtles today. In 1947, a single Kemp’s Ridley arribada was calculated as having 42,000 nests. Today, the total population of females is estimated to be around 2,500. They are listed as Critically Endangered (facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild in the immediate future) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.

Nesting:
Like its sister species the Olive Ridley, the Kemp’s Ridley utilizes the arribada (mass-nesting) as a nesting strategy. They nest more frequently than other species, every 1 ½ years and 2 to 3 times a season. They deposit around 110 eggs in their nest, which hatch in about 55 days. According to NOAA, “Kemp's ridleys are the only sea turtle species that nests predominantly during daylight hours.”

Description:
The Kemp’s Ridley is the smallest of sea turtles. Adults grow to be about 2 feet long and can weigh about 100 pounds maximum. The carapace is oval and gray-green in color. The under part of the shell or plastron is yellowish-white. There are 5 costal scutes on the carapace and 4 inframarginal scutes, which join the carapace to the plastron. The head is medium sized and triangular in form. Hatchlings are black. Unlike other sea turtles whose name reflects their appearance, the Kemp’s Ridley is named after Richard M. Kemp, a fisherman in the Keys of Florida, who first submitted this species for classification.

Habitat, Range and Migration:
Unlike most other turtles, the Kemp Ridley spends most if its time in shallow seas and rarely swims in waters more than 160 feet. According to NOAA, “Adult Kemp's primarily occupy neritic habitats. Neritic zones typically contain muddy or sandy bottoms where prey can be found. Their diet consists mainly of swimming crabs, but may also include fish, jellyfish, and an array of mollusks.”

The range of the Kemp’s Ridley is narrow compared to other sea turtles. Adults primarily inhabit the coastal waters off of Mexico. Their most important nesting ground is a 12-½ stretch of beach in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. A few nest on Padre Island, off the coast of Texas and elsewhere along the Mexican gulf coast.

Hatchlings become caught up in the currents and eddies of the Gulf waters, and are re-distributed all along the Gulf and Atlantic as far north as Nova Scotia. Immature turtles can be found along the Atlantic coast as far north as Massachusetts and Canada.

Diet:
Adult Kemp’s Ridleys are carnivorous bottom-feeders, eating a variety of animal foods from shallow waters. While they eat mollusks, fish, jellyfish, echinoderms etc, they have a marked preference for crabs and frequent the waters occupied by this favored delicacy.

Threats:
The fact that the Kemp’s Ridley spends its sea going life in shallow coastal waters where much human sea harvesting takes place has likely contributed to its rapid historical decline. Shrimp trawls troll these shallow waters and many Kemp’s Ridley’s become the victims of incidental capture in their nets. Near shore fishing also exacts a toll.

Harvesting of eggs and slaughtering of nesting females during arribadas has also also played a significant role in bringing this animal to its current critically endangered status.
As with other sea turtles, habitat development and degradation hastens the decline of the species.

The enforced use of turtle exclusion devices by trawlers as well as the protection of nesting habitat during arribadas is required if this species is to recover from the edge of extinction.

Translations is a collaborative work by Tom Burtonwood and Jacob C. Hammes. It has been selected for the inaugural Art Loop Open an art competition in Chicago. Translations is exhibited in the lobby of the Hard Rock Hotel located at 230 N. Michigan. Members of the public are invited to view the piece from October 15th – 29th and vote on it. Translations was first presented at Three Walls as part of their “Chasing Two Rabbits” program in Winter 2010.

About the video:

Contained within our unique animal identity is a strong desire to witness and experience symmetry, a desire informed by an overwhelming lack of its immediate presence in our waking lives. Symmetry and uniformity are present in the video collaboration between Burtonwood and Hammes, abstracted in terms of geometry and pure tones. Folding cubes and squares are accompanied by modulated, warbling sine waves and occasional bursts of distorted guttural voices, suggesting a human presence in a world of pure geometric and sonic abstraction.

Tom Burtonwood is an artist originally from the UK living and working in Oak Park, IL. He is interested in an array of subjects and issues relating to image making, ubiquitous technology and interactive objects. Currently he is working on a series of modular color studies relating to the video game Tetris. Recent exhibitions include The Center for Book and Paper Arts, Columbia College, Chicago; Three Walls, Chicago; Fountain, Brooklyn; Apex Art, New York. Burtonwood teaches at Columbia College and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Jacob C Hammes is a Chicago based interdisciplinary artist whose range of projects investigate the strained relationships and sites of interaction between humans and the natural world. Hammes is primarily interested in emphasizing the disconnection between the desire to emulate nature and our ability to understand it. Primarily using sculpture, digital media, and hypnosis, Hammes attempts to reveal the struggle to connect with our own animal identity.
Hammes has exhibited and performed extensively throughout the midwest and internationally. Hammes' work and various projects have been reviewed in publications such as Art Papers, Proximity Magazine, and the Leonardo Music journal.

Hammes has exhibited and performed extensively throughout the midwest and internationally. Hammes' work and various projects have been reviewed in publications such as Art Papers, Proximity Magazine, and the Leonardo Music journal.

Woodcut diagram of a visual alphabet and its application from Johann Horst von Romberch's work on memory, Congestorium artificiose memorie (Venice: Melchiorre Sessa, 1533). "Visual alphabets are ways of representing letters of the alphabet by images. These are formed in various ways; for example with pictures of objects whose shape resemble [sic] letters of the alphabet, as compasses or a ladder for A; or a hoe for N. Another way is through pictures of animals or birds arranged in the order of the first letter of their names, as A for Anser, goose, B for Bubo, owl."--F.A. Yates, The Art of Memory (London: Pimlico, 1992), p. 124-125.

The National Fire Dog Monument was created to recognize the incredible contributions that accelerant detection canines (arson dogs) make in keeping communities safe. These dogs do not ask for anything in return after risking their lives to reduce the negative impact of arson in their communities.

The life size bronze monument depicts a firefighter looking down at his canine partner who in turn is looking up at his partner ready to work. This incredible monument, From Ashes to Answers, was sculpted by 22 year old artist and Colorado firefighter, Austin Weishel. The bronzing process is being completed by BRONZE SERVICES FINE ART FOUNDRY in Loveland, CO.

The monument traveled from Denver, CO to Washington D.C. for placement at D.C. Fire Station #3 where the general public will be able to view it. The National Fire Dog Monument road show; is co-sponsored by State Farm and the American Humane Association. The monument made stops at state capitals along the way to D.C. as a way to recognize the contributions of first responders and their canine partners.
