This little guy actually tolerated me taking his picture for a time while he was chowing down on a tasty, tasty pine cone.

I'll admit, the Douglas Squirrel isn't necessarily the rarest, most exotic of the sciurids to be shooting, but I'll be damned if they aren't one of the cutest.

Some pictures of a trip to South Africa in Oktober 2011.

Taken with an Canon Eos 60D post processed with Adobe Lightroom 3.

Durban is the largest city in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal and the third largest city in South Africa. Durban is famous for being the busiest port in South Africa. It is also seen as one of the major centres of tourism because of the city's warm subtropical climate and extensive beaches. The municipality, which includes neighbouring towns, has a population of almost 4.5 million, making the combined municipality the biggest city on the east coast of the African continent. The metropolitan land area of 2,292 square kilometres is comparatively larger than other South African cities, resulting in a somewhat lower population density of 1,513 /km2.

Carolyn wanted to get a playmate for Oranjello for awhile. She was watching ads on Craigslist and Kijiji until finally she got a response that would actually work out. These were the pictures the guy sent us to show us the kittens he was giving away.

When we saw pictures of this one, we immediately thought (and Clint said), "Eww, let's not get that one." But that's exactly what we ended up doing! The guy kept calling him "Dirty Face". All the kittens were very skittish and elusive. Dirty Face was the only one who was easy to catch and hold. Carolyn wasn't sure about these kittens. If she had gone alone with Oranjello as was originally planned, she would have said, "This isn't working out, sorry." Because the second we walked in, the kittens scattered. Whenever we would catch one and try to introduce it to Oranjello, Oranjello would hiss and growl at the kitten. But Clint and the guy convinced Carolyn to pick one. Carolyn was concerned that his dirty face was indicative of a sickness and that's why he didn't run and hide as good as the other kittens. The guy finally told us we could take the kitten and see how Oranjello reacts in his own element, and if it didn't work out, we could bring the kitten back. The problem was the offer was only until Saturday because that was when the other prospects were coming. Soafter hemming and hawing from Tuesday to Friday (and Carolyn blogging about it), we finally decided to keep the kitten. We're glad we did, except Oranjello is a completely different cat now that he has a playmate. He's doesn't interact with Clint & Carolyn as much. But he and the kitten love each other and play together and sleep together. Lemonjello also has turned out to be a very sweet kitten.
